While the Eight Winds adorn the tower, the base of the Observatory is dedicated to the signs of the zodiac. Just under the balcony, relief carvings of the twelve signs of the zodiac are spread across eleven square panels, with only Scorpio and Libra sharing a single space (slide 2).

Between the signs of the zodiac are three rectangular panels depicting the three phases of a day: morning, noon, and evening (slide 3). The panels feature Greek gods and goddesses including Eros, Helios, Nyx, and Artemis as they journey across the skies from dawn to noon to dusk.

Before we welcome our guests into the Radcliffe Observatory tomorrow evening, we wanted to share a bit more about the details of the Observatory’s design that make it so special.

Just under the roof of the tower, eight carved reliefs depict the eight Grecian wind deities. The same carvings can be found on the original Tower of the Winds in Athens, which inspired the design of the Observatory. The Athenian Tower of the Winds was built circa 50 BC and still stands today (slide 3).

It just so happens that the stars align perfectly for this year’s ball to celebrate our beloved Observatory’s 250th birthday! Read on for a bit of history and a sneak peek into how this beautiful building will be the centerpiece of the upcoming ball.

Built in 1794, the Radcliffe Observatory functioned as Oxford’s epicenter for astronomical research and stargazing alike until 1934. Its design draws inspiration from The Tower of the Eight Winds in Athens, Greece, built in 50 BC. The gorgeous neoclassical building now serves as the heart of college life at GTC, housing the graduate common room and dining hall. For this year’s ball, we’ll turn back the clock and open the Observatory once again for guests to gaze at celestial bodies and wonder at the secrets of the cosmos. We can’t reveal too much, but guests can look forward to stargazing, tarot reading, and more within the walls of the Radcliffe Observatory.

Note that for bulk group tickets, there is one QR code for all the tickets. You can simply share the QR code with all individuals in the group and they can pick up their wristband individually. This is the same for guest tickets on the same QR Code.

🪪 𝙋𝙝𝙤𝙩𝙤 𝙄𝘿: All ticketholders must present photo ID to collect wristbands (ONLY national IDs, driver licenses, and passports will be accepted).

🚨 If you have not yet transferred your tickets to guests / new ticket holders, we have extended the deadline to transfer your tickets in FIXR to Wednesday (June 28) at 12pm BST (directions here).

‼️ You cannot collect a wristband on behalf of someone else, as we will be putting them on you when you collect them. There will be no exceptions to this, so if you cannot attend one of the collection times, you will need to receive your wristband at the door.
