Gawthorpe Textiles Collection

An internationally renowned collection of textiles located in the heart of Pennine Lancashire

One of the finest collections of lace, embroidery and textiles in Europe, Gawthorpe Textiles Collection is comprised of over 30,000 items from all over the world. The Collection was founded by Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth (1886-1967) as a teaching resource to revive traditional craft skills. Now an Accredited museum, the Collection is displayed across five galleries at Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham, Lancashire.

Having a brand new, shiny workspace is great, but without furniture it's a bit impractical.

We were advised to get in touch with The Senator Group in Burnley, which works with charities, schools and small business to donate products via their ‘Sustain Wish List’ initiative.

And we're so glad we did!

This week we took delivery of 28 stacker chairs, 6 tables, 6 office chairs and a wooden table, all in fantastic condition.

It has saved the charity a lot of money and we cannot thank them enough.

Here's two of our lovely volunteers, Jill and Vickie making use of the tables to explore some stunning hat boxes.

We had a very heavy box today that needed dividing into two and when we opened it up it was full of some amazing buttons and buckles...

It got us talking about our own memories of the button tin at grandparents’ houses.

As well as nostalgia it also sparked a conversation about a fear of buttons - which a couple of members of our team appear to have!

We’d love to hear any of your button tin memories - and also if you share the fear!

A very busy day today unloading the last of our costume collection onto the brand new racking at our new home of Northlight in Brierfield. Lots of hard work ahead of us to get all 30,000 items in the collection safely put away in the right places!

16/11/2023

Day 4 of the move. Items from our costume store at Gawthope Hall were safely transported to our new facility at Northlight Mill, Brierfield. Each item has been carefully packed prior to the move and it's logged leaving and recorded when it arrives. It's a huge undertaking. Here are a few photos from today.

🎀 We should have had a red ribbon to cut in celebration of Rachel Terry our Collections Manager! She has lead the packing & logistics of our move. Here she is placing the first boxes on our swanky new racking system. We still have a lot of items to come to Northlight, our new home, but it's going well so far! Costume moving tomorrow....yay! 🎀

1st day of our epic move of around 30,OOO items including quilts, lace, embroidery, costumes, hats, shoes, in fact our whole archives from Gawthorpe Textiles Collection. We are moving to bigger rooms with better climate conditions to our newly renovated premises in an old Textile mill (was Smith and Nephews) Northlight Industries, Brierfield.

Packing these lovely embroideries, thought to have been worked by Rachel Kay- Shuttleworth. Very poignant to rediscover these so close to Rembrance day. Both her brothers were killed in the First World War, and the estate was eventually to pass to a nephew who died in the Battle of Britain in the Second World War.

More lovely items being packed up today sorry we didn't take more photos

Spider 🕷️ brooch and a Scorpion 🦂 belt were amongst the items we found today that needed special attention with acid free tissue paper as we pack everything carefully for the removal men next week.

Monkey head, Silver Swan and floral parasols just another wonderful day at Gawthorpe Textiles Collection. Curator Rachel Terry and volunteer Christina Cope were carefully packing parasols ready for them to be moved with the rest of the archives to the newly renovated Northlight Industries Mill (formerly Smith & Nephews) Brierfield. Some of the catalogue needed updating so we were able to add the monkey face handle, silver swan with garnet eyes and the floral parasol.
