How much would the 2026 v**e tax levy cost you? The Government proposals are for a £1-£3 tax on each 10ml sold. We have calculated what this would mean with some examples.

To have your say on these tax rates and proposals, that will come into force in October 2026, you will need to either use the official Government consultation form or a simpler consumer-focussed form. The consultation closes on the 29/05/24.

The potential downsides to this tax, is that the illicit unregulated manufacture and selling on the black market will vastly increase, or people may return to smoking, or never take up va**ng in the first place. The to***co industry will be pleased, as this tax will lessen the financial motivation to switch to a safer alternative. The Government will be pleased because to***co taxes and v**e levies will not diminish. There will be negative health outcomes from this tax.

The Government is looking into banning many flavours. Responsible v**e shops do not sell to under 18's, it is already illegal. The Government wants to ban flavours which may include, desserts, slushes, bubblegum, and sweets with perhaps just plain fruit, to***co, and menthol remaining. UK to ban disposable v**es, restrict flavours and do more stupid stuff - The Counterfactual The UK government has decided it will ban disposable v**es and suggests it will ban v**e flavours. This will trigger more smoking, more illicit trade and more workarounds. The problem of youth va**ng is a non-problem and the government is reacting to a moral panic it doesn't understand.

How to tackle youth va**ng and smoking? The public consultation is now open on the link below. The Government wants to know about ⛔️ Banning Flavours ⛔️ amongst other things.

It took us about 90 minutes to complete although you do not have to respond in detail and can fly through the sections without giving a detailed reply.

Ultimately, we think most suggestions in this consultation will do little to stop illegal underage sales and will just hurt legitimate specialised v**e shops, and anyone else following the law. The only benefit will be to the black market and illegal sales, especially if flavours are banned. The only way to stop underage sales is through rigorous enforcement and large deterrent fines.

The law already bans a lot of what is being consulted on, so without enforcement, this is nothing more than political gesturing, but the result will be just the same; illegal underage sales will continue, adult v**ers will have no flavours except to***co and menthol unless they use the black market, which sells to children. High fines and rigorous enforcement is what's needed.
