IMPERFECT CINEMA
IMPERFECT CINEMA is a socio-participatory film collective co-founded by Allister Gall and Dan Paolantonio in 2010.
We make films and explore the transformative potential of DIY approaches to cinema, community and culture making.
Really looking forward to our first day of filming with the Community in Gwynfi, South Wales today. We’re here all week to create and craft a participatory film together, which takes as one of its points of inspiration Jill Craigie’s 1949 film ‘Blue Scar’ which was filmed and set here in Gwynfi, and which featured many members of the local community. We’ll explore how the past, present and future might intersect and interplay, and what is it that combines to make a sense of place, community and belonging. Should be a fascinating and exciting week! X

New Imperfect Cinema Film: ‘RE/POSIT/ORY’
Produced by Imperfect Cinema, with music composition and sound design by Patrick James Pearson, this new five-screen film was commissioned by The Box and has been in development over the past eight months as a part of their Reimaging the Film Archive programme, which is funded by the National Lottery and the BFI Screen Heritage Fund.
RE/POSIT/ORY is a five-screen film installation by Allister Gall and Dan Paolantonio, co-founders and co-directors of the Imperfect Cinema film collective. Drawing from the extensive resources of The Box Film Archive, the film seeks to reimagine the archive as a place of memory, absence, beauty and loss.
RE/POSIT/ORY will be showing in The Media Lab Gallery at The Box (Plymouth, UK) until 29 September 2024.

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?
How can the sensory perception/subjective experience be communicated and challenged by filmmaking? How does film allow us to connect to others and the world by exchanging subjective realities?
One of the premises of neurodiversity is that the ways we see, hear, experience the world are slightly different and unique for every person. The ways we interact with the world make us who we are.

Just received a lovely surprise from one of my very cool BA2 filmmaking students, Sartikah—a printed photo of myself - which I had no idea she had taken!
It’s part of their analogue photography project for our Imperfect Cinema module, where students have been considering alternative filmmaking, Third Cinema, ‘punk’ filmmaking, No Wave, experimental film, surrealism, Soviet Montage, creative obstructions, manifestos/DOGME 95, and more recently psychedelic/flicker film guided by filmmaker and associate lecturer Patrycja Loranc.
Today we just a fantastic session led by my Imperfect Cinema partner Dan Paolantonio, where we explored Cyanotypes, looked at analogue processes/filmmaking and pondered the concept of humans being analogue beings (and not digital). Students will be able to explore analogue with our new 16mm camera!
I'm super keen to see the films they'll craft for the module and very proud of their creativity, and willingness to experiment and push their practice into new areas—stay tuned for a public micro-cinema event in Plymouth in late April/early May where you can come to watch their films as they take over Imperfect Cinema for an evening!
Tonight people! Join Imperfect Cinema & Alternate Sensory Reality at Manor Street Galleries for Cinaesthesia! Free of charge, 6pm till late! Hey, Ho, Let’s Go! X

A festive blast from the past - Imperfect Cinema Xmas Matinee 2011! Mince pies, radical DIY film, mulled wine, festive cheer and a super-8 film played backwards & upside down (unintentionally - mainly due to the aforementioned mulled wine!).
Stay tuned for a few exciting IC updates in the next few days! X
14 years ago, the very first IMPERFECT CINEMA micro-cinema event was held at Benjamin Turners joint, Jack Chams! The bery first poster featured Rachel Gippetti as a feminist gangster (doing her laundry on Mutley Plain).
We're busier now than ever! We have evolved the idea into new perspectives, but certainly kept the same ethos and approach.
And we have very exciting news to announce soon, with new projects, exciting collaborations and continued opportunities for local people to participate in the creative filmmaking process and screen your work publically here in Plymouth and beyond!
Who would have thought it!
Imperfect Cinema were delighted to contribute to this year’s International Home Movie Day at The Box in Plymouth! Fantastic to share and make movie memories with such a diverse range of people X

In Plymouth, Home Movie Day is a collaboration between The Box and University of Plymouth exploring how home movies and amateur films form important cultural heritage. These films contain possibilities for how we might live now and in the future.
This Friday, we're looking forward to supporting the 2023 Plymouth Community History Festival, with our interactive silver-screen-themed history tour along Stonehouse’s iconic Union Street. There is genuinely remarkable (and largely completely forgotten) film & cinema heritage here, which will be brought back to life by Plymouth’s very own underground film Collective!
Check out the other unique and amazing events organised by brilliant projects, happening as part of this fantastic celebration of the City:
