What is the difference between an APPOINTED PERSON and a FIRST AIDER?

Simply put:

✅ An appointed person is someone who is nominated to take charge of first aid arrangements. So, think about such things as looking after the first aid kit and calling an ambulance in an emergency.

They do not require formal training or certification in first aid.

They oversee operations but only provide direct hands-on care to the injured person with guidance over the phone from emergency services.

✅ A first aider is someone who is qualified to provide hands on first aid treatment in the event of an injury or illness. A person who has received formal training and certification for their role.

When an injury occurs, a first aider is the person who can directly approach and assist the injured individual with immediate medical care.

It’s good to remember that both roles are essential for workplace safety, and having a combination of trained first aiders and appointed persons ensures a comprehensive approach to handling emergencies. 😊👍

So, what is First Aid and why is it so important?

First Aid is basically the help given to someone who is injured or ill to keep them safe and to cause no further harm.

First aid training is important for many reasons, such as:

✔ It increases safety: You've heard 'prevention is better than cure,' well First aid training can help you do just that.Training can also help you recognize and respond to signs of illness or distress in yourself or others - you might think this is something we all do anyway but you will be surprised at what you don't spot/or can't because you don't know what to look out for.

✔ It can help save lives: You could be in a situation where someone needs CPR, choking relief, bleeding control and shock management. Learn how to perform these life-saving skills and make a difference between life and death in an emergency situation.

✔ It offers the affected persons immediate support to relieve pain: I can tell you there is no better feeling than knowing you can help someone who is injured or ill by providing the needed comfort and care they need until professional medical help arrives. I promise you that feeling you get is second to none. 🙌

Want to make a positive impact on your community and society?

First aid training is a valuable skill that can benefit you and others in many ways. Learn first aid and be prepared for any emergency with us.

Please share this post! CPR and AED can save lives.

This is a link for a session I delivered for Prestatyn, Rhyl and district U3A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cZtWador4k

Generally I deliver to much smaller groups so this was a bit of a change for me. I made a mistake on the abbreviation of AED🙄 (despite training this for years) and one of the springs came loose on a manikin😬(hence the noise later in the video).

I hope this video is useful to you but if you want to learn face to face then my next free session is at lunchtime on Tuesday 9th April on St Asaph Business Park at Celtic Financial Planning Ltd

Many thanks for the permission to share the video https://prestatynrhyldistrict.u3asite.uk/

FREE CPR/AED Awareness Session

It feels like ages since I last ran one of these events, but when I checked my diary it was only in January! I've been really busy with school holidays, training sessions and other bits and pieces.

I'm really pleased to tell you that the next FREE AED & CPR session is scheduled for lunchtime on the 9th of April. Celtic Financial Planning Ltd have kindly invited me to use their premises.

If you want to book a space on this session you can message me or send an email: [email protected]

For more information on the courses we run please visit the website https://ghwtraining.co.uk/courses/

When you are out and about and you see green… then notice it’s a sign all about the defibrillators.

Would you know how to use one? Have you had to at some point?

Be great to hear from you if you have! 🙌

One day, you could save a life!

21/01/2024

Friday was a busy day for me

I delivered two AED awareness sessions back to back.

The first one in Prestatyn for U3a (University of the Third Age). https://www.facebook.com/groups/1480769235683719 at Festival Church for a group of around fifty retired people.

Then I hot-footed (at 20mph) over to Rhyl where Michael Phillips Care Agency Ltd kindly let me use their training room. Nine people attended, including a couple from Porthmadog and staff from Groom Room Unisex barbers, Elan Mortgage Solutions and Coatech - The Resin Surfacing Specialists.

I haven't booked the venue for next session yet but I am thinking that it will likely be in Prestatyn, probably an evening in March.

If you're interested in gaining some confidence in using a public access defibrillator, and you can spare an hour of your time, I'd love to see you at one of these free sessions. Tell me what days and times of the week suit and I will try to accommodate you

Also, if you have a venue that you're happy for me to use, then let me know.

According to the HSE, First aid training should be mandatory for all - as these skills can quite literally save someone's life.

In the workplace, however, first aid consideration is mandatory - so how can you ensure that your workplace complies with the Health and Safety Executives (HSE UK) guidelines and most importantly, that your team is ready to deal with emergencies?

Certificates for first aid at work last for three years. Once certificates have expired the first aider is no longer considered to be competent to act as a workplace first aider.

Do you need to undertake a requalification course to obtain another three-year certificate?

If you'd like to know more about the training courses we offer then please get in touch. I'm more than happy to discuss your requirements.

Still time to book on the 2 day refresher tomorrow and Thursday though. 😉

07/11/2023

Still a few places left for the First Aid at Work Refresher 2 day course starting tomorrow.

If you have a first aid certificate about to elapse or in the upcoming months please get in touch to find out more about the courses I run. I'm happy to discuss your requirements.

The course tomorrow and Thursday is being held at the OpTIC Technology Centre in St Asaph, lunch included in price.

How to do CPR 01/11/2023

If you are witnessing a cardiac arrest, what would you do?

First thing is to call 999 and start CPR. You'll be given instructions while you wait for help.

Read more about it here from the British Heart Foundation

As an employer, there are many benefits to having a first aid at work certificate.

First and foremost, it is your responsibility to make sure that your employees receive immediate attention if they are taken ill or are injured at work.

Accidents and illness can happen at any time and first aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries from becoming major ones.

Do you want to boost employee morale or provide a fantastic team-building exercise?

Maybe you need a refresher course? Certificates for the purpose of first aid at work last for 3 years. Before your certificate expires you will need to take a requalification course to obtain another 3 year certificate.

Is yours about to expire? Do you want to be a competent first aider in the workplace?

Our course on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th is just what you need. It will be held at the Optic Centre, St Asaph and all are welcome to book on.

If you saw someone having a cardiac arrest would you know what to do?

It’s important to first call 999 then get someone to find a defibrillator while you perform CPR.

A defibrillator?? Do you know what one is and what it does?

The British Heart Foundation have information that can help you learn a bit more.

Head to: https://www.bhf.org.uk/how-you-can-help/how-to-save-a-life/defibrillators

Below you will see the defibrillators in our area. You can put in your location and find your nearest.
