Want to meet new people before you get to campus?? 👀👀
Then we've got the app for you! A new and different way to make friends at University is to download the “Umii” app.
Umii is a friend meeting app (kind of like a dating app) that allows you to see and be seen by other verified UCLan students who have also signed up.
Create a profile on the app, with your course, interests and hobbies and then leave it to Umii to find people like you! Umii also includes icebreaker questions as a feature to ease the pressure of reaching out to someone new. Better yet, you can start using the Umii app as soon as you have your UCLan email. Talking through the app before meeting also helps reduce the pressure of meeting and making friends, allowing you to meet at your own pace. The Students’ Union also hosts meet up events to help you meet the people you are talking to - keep an eye on our socials and in the app for details of our first meet up!
Grab yourself a bargain from our huge collection of pots, pans, plates, glasses and more - lovingly donated by staff and students over the summer to be re-homed as students return to campus!
We anticipate the stall to be hugely popular, and it will operate on a first-come-first-served basis so make sure you pop down early!
The Great Donate can be found on the bottom floor of the Students' Union building where the Community Fridge is, and all items will be priced very cheaply between 20p and £5 (with some exceptions), making it a far cheaper option than high street stores and even some charity shops. All money raised will go towards a project in the new year aiming to support students during the Cost of Living Crisis.
We're hoping to take both cash and card - but we'd encourage you to bring both if you can, just in case!

This month were celebrating and raising awareness for East and Southeast Asian Heritage month! ESEA Heritage month runs yearly each September and aims to celebrate, acknowledge and learn about the incredible ways in which East and Southeast Asian communities have helped to shape the UK!
ESEA Heritage Month began in September 2020 amidst the rise of hate crimes against the ESEA community during the Covid pandemic. It was founded by besea.n - a community focused, volunteer-led organisation with a mission to empower, educate and embrace East and South East Asian people - and their allies!
Their vision is one where their communities are seen and supported in all spaces.
This years theme is “Changing Seasons”, aiming to offer a reflection on the cyclical nature of life. Just as the seasons transition, so too do our experiences, cultures, and identities within the ESEA communities and beyond. From the tangible shifts in weather to the evolving cultural zeitgeist, this theme encapsulates the collective journey towards new beginnings and growth.
Here at UCLan, we have a great population of students that have travelled from East and Southeast Asia to study with us, along with a rich body of home students from East and Southeast Asian descent.
We’d love for you to share your heritage stories with us whether you’re part of UCLan or not, let us know in the comments!
Here’s how else you can celebrate and take part:
• Talk about your experiences with East and Southeast Asian culture
• Try East and Southeast Asian dishes
• Lean about the contributions of East and Southeast Asia
• Visit an East and Southeast Asia art and culture exhibition
Meeting new people - the thing we all want to do but simultaneously dread! Luckily that means you’re in the same boat as everybody else, wanting to mingle and meet new people but trying to overcome the nerves first.

So what is the Students’ Union you ask? Are they part of the University? Are they a Union? Do I have to pay to join???
To put it simply, we exist to make life better for students. Whether that be by campaigning for change, putting on events or supporting you through your studies, we always put students first and at the heart of our work. From the Course Reps and School Presidents who help shape teaching and learning, or the Advice Centre which supports thousands of students each year, to the Sports Clubs and Societies who provide an opportunity for students to connect and feel part of the student community – your student experience matters to us.
Every student enrolled at UCLan is automatically a member of UCLan Students’ Union, regardless of which campus they’re studying on. There’s no need to sign up and there’s no membership fee!
We work together with students to create a safe, inclusive Union and campus. At the SU, you can grab a bite to eat or drink in our café or social space "Lampworks" , socialise with your mates, come for a study break, join a society or sports cub, come to our hundreds of events, campaign for change and just generally enjoy your student life - basically there’s a lot going on here (that’s why we’re situated in heart of Preston Campus). Keep following us as we post more info about us and your 2024 Welcome Week!

Don’t miss out on our cheapest early bird offer, they’re almost sold out!
Following the current rioting and civil unrest across the country, we understand that many of our student and staff community feel unsafe travelling. The University and Students' Union are recommending that all students and staff members download the SafeZone app if your phone or personal device allows you to.
SafeZone is a free app and electronic system, giving you extra peace of mind when moving around. It can be used to anonymously flag urgent issues and is available to download now from the Apple or Google Play store. The app can be used nationally and globally.
It is in addition to the usual safety and security the University provides and allows them to send mass text messages to students in an emergency.
The app provides many additional safety benefits, whether you’re working late, walking to your car at night, travelling at home or overseas, or have seen something that makes you feel uncomfortable.
Please follow this link for more information on the app and how to set up an account

A message of support and solidarity from your Students' Union following the recent riots -
The horrific attack in Southport and the acts of violence, islamophobia and racism that we are seeing across the country (and close to our campuses) stand against everything we believe in.
We know this is an incredibly difficult time for students, staff and our wider community. We know that some of our members might be feeling scared and confused. We are here to help.
Please visit the article below for key information and options for seeking support (both University-led and external).
If you experience or witness any hate crime or incident, please consider reporting so you can access support.
We can support you in making a report to the police or an anonymous report - it is completely your choice. Anything you tell us will remain strictly confidential.
You can report by completing the online reporting form or emailing us at [email protected] any time for support or to make a report.
If you want to report incidents externally, without going through the University, please visit one of the links listed in the article or one that you trust
