Why are multiplication tables important?

Research suggests that being able to recall times tables fluently is helpful when it comes to other maths activities. That’s why we are teaching pupils their times tables, so they can recall them and don’t have to work them out.

The multiplication tables check helps us understand which pupils know their times tables and it also helps schools identify if children may need additional support.

Why is it important to know times tables?

Having a secure grasp of the basics of maths, including the fluent recall of times tables, is crucial for children’s success in moving on to more complex maths. Learning multiplication tables is a key part of maths education.

Do I need to prepare anything to prepare my child for the check?

No, you do not need to do anything additional to prepare your child for the times tables assessments.

As part of usual practice at Pegasus Education, we will request you to practise times tables with your child.

Reluctant Readers: Why teachers are concerned about the rise of struggling and reluctant readers and what you can do to help | GL Assessment New study explores the complexities of rising reading reluctance across UK secondary schools - and how schools can rise to the challenge

Timeline photos 23/03/2023

Anecdotally, teachers were telling us they’d noticed a rise in reluctant readers, so we commissioned an exclusive YouGov survey to investigate. And you were right - the findings are conclusive. But together we can help. Our new report gathers practical recommendations from school leaders designed to help teachers identify and address their own school’s issues.

Why should every student do non-verbal reasoning?

At Pegasus Education, we believe that practising some non-verbal reasoning (NVR) as part of 11 Plus preparation is beneficial, even if NVR is not included in your 11 Plus exam. Based on our experience and assessments, we believe that NVR helps students to develop their core reasoning skills and abilities.

NVR tests the students’ ability to recognise similarities, analogies, and patterns in unfamiliar designs. These reasoning processes are widely accepted as being fundamental to students’ ability to understand and assimilate new information and ideas. They enable students to make sense of new information and to relate it to what they already know.

The reasoning processes are used whenever and wherever students learn, such as recognising similarities between words when learning to read and spell, identifying number patterns or even seeing an analogy between instructions for building a Lego model and recipes for baking. Scores on NVR tests will therefore give an indication of how easily students will acquire new concepts and master new material in a wide range of school subjects, based on their current levels of functioning. Using designs rather than words allows reasoning processes to be assessed independently of language skills.

Dear All,

Welcome to our January 2023 Newsletter.

At Pegasus Education, we recognise that every child's strength and challenge are different. So whether your child has a suspected or diagnosed Special Education Need and Disability (SEND) or is excelling academically and needs a challenge - we are here to tailor our curriculum and approach so that it's right for them.

Currently we endeavour to support our SEN students in our mainstream sessions through the following:

1. Creating a positive and supportive environment for all pupils without exception through encouraging positive relationships, fostering active engagement, and nurturing well-being of all students.

2. Building an ongoing, holistic understanding of our pupils and their needs through the Assess - Plan - Do - Review process. This is best done in one-to-one sessions.

3. Ensuring all pupils have access to high quality teaching, through (a) flexible grouping, (b) cognitive and metacognitive strategies (teaching students to better understand their own thinking and learning processes),(c) explicit instruction, (d) using technology - such as apps which help to develop reading, writing and communication skills, and (d) scaffolding.

4. Complementing high quality teaching with carefully selected small group and one-to-one interventions. The required intensity of the intervention will depend on the level of each student's needs, which could be (a) low need - universal intervention, (b) medium need - targeted intervention and (c) high need - specialist intervention.

5. Working effectively with Teaching Assistants (TA) - TAs can be used to lead high-quality one-to-one intervention.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you want to discuss or need any further information on the above.
