You may know me more now for my involvement in football and rugby but also I competed in running in both cross country and road running from age 16 to 28.

Growing up in a military environment I was exposed to fitness an early age and yes I did play football and rugby but I would daily go running with my dad to get my fitness levels up.

Competing in the Gibraltar road running league and also the cross country championships during my time in the Army, I was often the first name on the list by my senior officers as I would often challenge for the titles and was one of the fittest in the regiment.

If there was one thing I wish I knew though it would be that by combining gym based training such as box jumps and split squats and running mechanics such as A Skips and being able to improve my switching. Maybe then I would have a few more medals to show for it.

It also explains why I would often be suffering from shin splints and fatigue regularly because my training wasn't what it should have been because back then, I didn't have the knowledge I do now.

It is for this reason that I love to help athletes to get faster by showing them proven technialques that I wish I knew back in the day. Most even improve by up to 1 second in our first coaching session bacause of the improved awareness I feedback about your running technique.

How my athlete got rid of back pain in one session

One of my athletes picked up a back injury which was causing him some discomfort and we managed to to ease the pain and enhance his movement in just 1 session.

How?
Using a biomechanics assessment tooling to identify triggers which we soon identified and set about using muscle energy techniques to increase movement range and lose the discomfort he felt when using his upper body.

My athlete has now gone home with some exercises to do to continue rehabbing his back and will return to training wirh me next week where we will slowly build him back up to full strength.

Rest is good, but you need to have a way to keep the muscles activating even at low intensity like we have today.

I was speaking to an athletes mum this week and was asked if training 6 days a week was too much.

Her son is an aspiring footballer who does 121 training, team training and 2 games at the weekend.

What we need to consider here is how does the athlete feel and when asked, he said he was fine.

When asked about his energy levels, they were consistent throughout the week and never complained of feeling tired.

He would sleep well and had no problems when it came to meal times and kept hydrated throughout the day.

Having structure in your training with a variety of loads / intensity can be the difference between over training and training effectively.

You must take your recovery seriously as without the right refuelling and rest, then there will be no progression in your performance which is why monitoring your mood, energy levels and sleep are 3 key things to consider when you want to progress.

How well do you actually know yourself?

Being unsure of who we are and our reasoning behind what we do is often the reason you don't progress at the rate you want to.

What have you done that has got you to where you are today?

I use all my passions to help others to live a happy and more fulfilled life through the 24 years experience I have working in sport and in the military, including some very challenging situations.

How protein powers peak performance and speeds up recovery.

Before we go any further, lets look at what protein actually is.

Protein is a macro nutrient that is made up of amino acids which are the building blocks of the body's tissue and organs.

Protein plays an important part in a number of the body functions including muscle repair and growth of muscles and also supporting the body's immune system.

During intense levels of activity such as a gym or field based session or match, the muscle fibres get put under stress and results in small muscular damage. It is protein that provides the amino acids to naturally repair the damage caused.

Adequate protein intake will also help reduce muscle soreness or DOMS (Delay in the onset of muscle soreness) as after exercise the body goes into a state of increased protein synthesis to help support the repair of damaged muscle tissues.

For years I have suffered from being insecure in my appearance, regularly feeling out of shape.

As a teenager I was a competitive road runner and was once compared to a lollipop stick with a head and in recent years fearing I don't have the physique to warrent being a coach to set an example.

But then I began to accept that my journey, my goals and my lifestyle is not the same as yours.

I grew up being told I wasn't good enough to become a footballer or a coach, but then if I listened to the doubters I wouldn't be doing what I do now.

Earlier this year I competed in Englands Strongest Man. I didn't manage to get the lifts I wanted but I put myself in an environment out of my comfort zone because I had a vision that I would compete on the national stage.

Now how would you feel if you set your self a target and actually took action and achieved what you said you would?

Now being honest here, I got no lift on all of my events at Englands strongest man, but what I now do is use that experience to continue to master the sport and go again next time.

I use my experience of failure to continue my learnings.

Can you say you do the same?

Because of the clubs I have worked with in Rugby and football and the people I know, I regularly get asked how I got to where I did.

The simple answer is that I chased my dream and I made damn sure that I found out everything I needed to to make it happen and 24 years later can be proud of my journey.

What's your relationship with food like?
Do you understand the importance of fuelling your body and how it can influence your performance and recovery?

Protein and Carbs get all the attention but you also need good fat sources in your diet such as avocado and eggs which can also act as an energy source.

Did you know that when it comes to energy that fats offer 9 calories per gram where as carbohydrates offer 4 calories per gram each so offering more from an energy standpoint but we need to get a healthy balance of all 3 of these macro nutrients.

Over the coming weeks, we will be looking at ways that you can build a better relationship with food and provide you with education and ideas that can help to fuel your way to optimal performance.
