This week is the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and I met with organisations who are campaigning globally. Human rights and environmental defenders all around the world are threatened sometimes by the law, and sometimes by violence and death. They are working for a better world.

Human rights defenders in Guatemala face smears, threats and attacks, particularly in the defence of democracy. I met with Claudia Samayoa yesterday, as well as Peace Brigades International (UK), which provides activists with life-saving support.

The Government must do more to

More than worrying that the President of Cop28, who also heads Abu Dhabi’s national oil company, puts out the bogus claim that “there is no science” that phasing out fossil fuels is necessary to limit global warming to 1.5C.

His commercial interests have clouded his judgment.

Hopes of a long term ceasefire in Gaza are on hold again and the Israeli murderous campaign against civilians has started again. When do we even hear our government repeating the Americans’ demand for less killings? But the world should be demanding a ceasefire.

Cop28 begins today in the UAE, number 7 global oil producer. In charge is the Chief Exec of their national oil company. This is a gross conflict of interest. So do we get progress in saving the world or a shop window of oil and gas sales and a fire sale of our planet?

On Friday I spoke at the Rochdale, Heywood, and Middleton Women's Branch white ribbon at St Mary's in the Baum.

It was an inspiring evening, coming together to raise awareness and stand against violence towards women and girls.

Let's continue the conversation and work towards a safer, more inclusive future.

I was delighted to meet with Rochdale Trading Standards who won the Highly Commended Award in the Intellectual Property category at Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) Awards, held at the House of Commons.

The award was in recognition of the team’s incredible work in fighting counterfeiting, including the disruption of a £65 million organised crime network.

The team may be small, but with help from partner agencies, they are relentless in their fight against criminal activity across the borough.

Enough is enough and every agency from the police, social services, prosecution services and the courts must show we will change the rules to put the victim first.

Once again Rochdale Borough loses out on the so-called Levelling up funding whilst many Tory MPs were happy to boast about the funding they had seen offered to their constituents.

Rochdale needs levelling up funding more than probably all of these areas but Rochdale has lost tens of millions of £s under the Tory austerity years. I would have welcomed even this government’s funding but it wasn’t offered on the basis of need so we didn’t get.

Real levelling up would restore funding to health, to education and to the Council so that we can invest in the skill of the community, the health of our people, the caring services we need to enrich Rochdale financially but more importantly in the quality of all our lives. Alas not with this government where tax cuts are the offer for the better off.

Today after our surgery in Smithy Bridge Library, we spoke to residents on Milbury, Lake Side, Woodheys and Merlin.

Lots of casework including some urgent pothole repairs, drainage concerns and action to be taken about the churning up of grass verges.

Unfortunately I was unable to vote on the ceasefire motion as I was in hospital receiving chemotherapy. My position is clear: I will continue to work towards pressuring our government for a ceasefire to safeguard innocent civilians and achieve peace.

My ambition was to travel from the hospital to London in order to vote. I always recognised that this could prove impossible and, as it turned out to be on that date, it was impossible to arrange a proxy vote at such short notice.

: I co-sponsored a Parliamentary motion calling for the Prime Minister to press for an immediate cessation of hostilities, ensuring the immediate, unconditional release of the Israeli hostages and to end to the total siege of Gaza allowing for unfettered access of supplies and fuel, to guarantee that international humanitarian law is upheld and that civilians are protected in accordance with those laws.
