RW Osteopath
Osteopath, Cranial Osteopath, Infant Feeding Coach.
Mouth breathing always prompts me to check for tension in the thorax, throat or jaw that could be restricting tongue movement and interfering woth feeding or good function in the face.
I worked on the baby's diaphragm, neck and cranial base as those are areas associated with the nerve supply related to digestion and control of the stomach contents. Mum reported that baby seemed more comfortable and less prone to reflux since.

A wonderfully kind review from another of the wonderfully kind patients I'm fortunate enough to treat.
Lots of mums experience upper back, neck and shoulder pain when they are breastfeeding and looking after a new baby. Some of this can be from the positions you find yourself in for sustained periods of time as you feed your baby.
Have a look at my page for more tips from the last few days. If you've given them a try and not seen the improvement you need it might be time to get some hands-on treatment to address your pain.

Kids can build up tensions and restrictions from bouncing around and falling over like adults. Often kids don't complain of pain and aren't able to express why or where they feel uncomfortable. This little ones mum had just noticed that he was quite tense and had his behaviour had changed recently. After his last treatment he'd been more settled so let's see if it helps again this time.
One of the side effects of having phenomenally nice patients, is phenomenally nice reviews...
Right-handedness or left hand dominance shouldn't develop before one year of age.
If you notice your baby is consistently using one side more than another its worth getting checked as it can in rare cases be an indicator of damage to nerves or other structures. This is usually picked up at birth as part of the new-born checks before your baby leaves the hospital.
If you continue to have concerns you can raise this with your health visitor or GP who will be able to do a neurological assessment and refer if appropriate.
Osteopaths are trained to differentiate between neurological or permanent problems as well as minor tensions or restrictions that could be contributing to a baby using their body less symmetrically than you might expect.
Osteopaths are skilled at picking up subtle differences in tension or restriction that can lead to a baby, or adult, using their body asymmetrically.

Our bodies are amazing!
Look at the phenomenal biological changes that happen as we bond with our babies. And that is just in mum's brain; I haven't even started on the life-changing neural patterning that babies undergo in response!
I see lots of babies in clinic with breastfeeding problems, but often the problems started a lot earlier, so I started a breastfeeding drop in St Albans Library where parents could access information, support and advice earlier and without a pay-wall.
But its still not enough. Often the disruption starts at birth with dis-regulation caused by separation.
1 hour continuous skin to skin is the bare minimum.
It takes 6 hours for baby's brain to 'wire' and 20 hours for mum's.
Please share if you have a pregnant friend who might benefit from this information & set them up for breastfeeding success.

Recently listened to a fantastic webinar by Nils Bergman on how skin-to skin contact wires the mother's, baby's and Father's brain for higher resilience & shorter stress responses as well as bonding and breastfeeding. The Epigenetics; the way the environment alteres the expression of DNA and structure of the brain is astonishingly complex, but as simple as holding your baby close; in skin to skin contact immediately after birth for a minimum of an hour. I'm sure I'll post more about this as its such powerful biology with lifelong implications. But if there's one thing you can do for your new baby; skin to skin. Especially for sick or ore-term babies.
Here's some of the things I think about & assess when babies present with colic in clinic. Each deserves an essay but briefly;
VAGUS NERVE; exits the cranial base and supplies a lot of the upper digestive tract. Compression or irritation has the potential to contribute to digestive irritability.
FEEDING ROUTINES; larger infrequent feeds can over-fill a baby's stomach causing discomfort & regurgitation of excess milk.
DIAPHRAGM; This forms the sphincter that closes off the top of the stomach. Excessive tension can affect how effectively that muscle works. There also an element of just muscle strength& maturity here that improves with age.
ALLERGIES; if the gut is struggling to digest some elements of the milk it can slow the transit through the gut & leave the stomach fuller for longer.

The diaphragm is the main muscle of breathing, but plays several other roles too. When its too tight it doesn't function optimally and can play a role in neck pain, headaches, reflux and constipation. It can stay tight after coughs, colds and chest infections as well as being easily affected by stress & anxiety.
That s why its an area I pay attention to when treating both babies and adults, because osteopathy looks at the whole person as well as the body as a whole.
If it wasn't so hard to spell it might be one of my favorite muscles.
