Write Out Loud Sale
Guest poets: Pauline Omoboye & Janine Booth

Launch of Pauline Omoboye 's And No One Heard Her Cries (hidden voice publishing)
Omoboye rewards the reader with snapshots of family and friends and lovers and dreams, as well as refusing to look away from the difficulties that make all those loving connections so important. From “Another violent pounding at my front door" to “The child I grew and always knew Has returned to me at last.” Omoboye hymns the need for strength, but has softer songs, too. By writing this, we hear the cries of the child she was, and watch her heal.

& Janine Booth...
is a disaffected middle-aged woman and Marxist motormouth who will be reading ranting, rhyming and revolting poems from her latest collection, Amplify.

Monday 20th May sees the return of Sale Write Out Loud!

You’re in for a treat with 3 fabulous guest poets, take a read of their bios below…

Linda Downs is a northern poet who performs at open mics in Greater Manchester and beyond. Her first collection Cuckoo comes out next year.
Linda’s poetry is a perfect blend of comical, profound & eye opening.

Shaun Fallows is a Wigan poet born with cerebral palsy. Real and raw, expect potholes, speed-dating and Amsterdam in this exploration of disability, relationships and travel.
He will be touring his new book ‘Redundant Butties’ which defines what it means to grow up as a working-class man and wheelchair user today. Our hearts are not desolate, just the tyre tracks are muddied.

Kate Hook () is a lactose-intolerant cheese addict originally from Wythenshawe, who only moved to Sale because it had better cheese.

As a “fairweather feminist” who lives in a house full of boys, she can frequently be found dodging bath and bedtime by attending poetry nights and comedy gigs.

Her first poetry book “I Can Hear You Ironing” came out in March, and takes a tongue-in-cheek look at parenting, politics, and the toxicity of online comparison culture.

Kate is performing at Rotherham’s Women of the World (WOW) Festival in May, and is scheduled to appear on popular poetry podcast “Spoken Label” in early June.

Open mic slots are available via emailing [email protected] or via Instagram or commenting on the event post.

Sale Write Out Loud takes place on the 3rd Monday of every month at Sale Waterside Arts Centre. Located directly opposite Sale Tram Stop.

The venue is fully accessible for wheelchair users & those with hearing aids.

Time: 7:30pm - 10pm

A great way to spend a wild, wet April night!

Tonight's stimulus for you to respond to in your own prose poetry:

The Time I Was Mugged in New York City
I told people that the travel sickness pills
made me stupid. I entered JFK with a red
suitcase and no one to greet me. A man
came up to me, dressed in black. I found
myself in a car park by an expensive van
and he was holding my luggage. Get In, he
said. There wasn’t a single thought in my
head. I found myself inside his van; he
locked the doors immediately after; made
me switch my phone off as we went under
the bridge. We spoke about Niagara Falls.
He chose the narrowest roads in the city,
a needle making a joke out of Manhattan.
When he pulled up outside Grand Central
station, he said – don’t get out, there are
bad people around. He made me unzip
my suitcase, books and bras spilling over
the seat, and give him all my money. Then
he helped me out of the van like I was a
princess; he held my bags like a vassal and
kissed my cheek. Get In, I hear whenever
a man pushes me too far; Get In to my big
black car. Sometimes in my dreams, I am
sitting beside him on the leather; I don’t
need to be ordered and together, we drive
with melodious speed over the East River

And No One Heard Her Cries 11/04/2024

Meanwhile... Many of you will have heard our regular guest poet Pauline Omoboye. I have been working with her for the last 18 months on her collection And No one Heard Her Cries.
We will have a celebration at Sale Out Loud soon.
But meanwhile...
Buy the book!
Omoboye takes us on a tender & testing inner road trip through domestic violence 'Battered, Busted, Bruised and Broken' to love for family and women and ultimately to her own inner resilience, humour and beauty on the mountain top 'Where the sunshine smiles at the sand'. Omoboye's spirited, articulate, activist rhythms, will not be silenced. 'To hear the singing words
my tears drip freely like falling rain.' In And No one Heard Her Cries she sings loud and resoundingly her personally political and poetic prowess.

Sarah Pritchard - poet/editor/Sale Out Loud/playback theatre Manchester.

And No One Heard Her Cries Pauline Omoboye invites us to come alongside her to bear witness of a girls’ journey to womanhood. Born into her mother’s love, marred by childhood sexual abuse and domestic violence. Secrets and pain, emerge into a celebration of love and the power of friendships, growth and healing.
