Sector Routeways is an Opportunity Sheffield project that offers unemployed and economically inactive residents the training and work experience they need to secure a job in a sector with high numbers of vacancies. Here is Juma’s story:

Juma arrived in Sheffield in 2020 as a Refugee from Sudan. Having been supported by City of Sanctuary Sheffield to start his new life in the UK, he volunteered for the charity. Because he enjoyed helping people there, Juma was drawn to the Adult Social Care Sector Routeway.

On the training course, Juma’s initial aspiration was simply to gain a certificate that would be recognised in the UK. But once he completed the course, Juma had the chance to move into work at Pingley Court Care Home – and he took to the role immediately.

Having impressed his manager with his enthusiasm, Juma was quickly offered paid employment.

He has now worked on several different shift patterns, including nights, and completed a series of training courses with Pingley Court, including infection control, nutrition, mental health, handling, dementia, sepsis and continues to progress.

Dawn, Manager at Pingley Court Care Homes, says:

“Juma fit Pingley Court like a glove, immediately taking to the environment and settling well into his role. Within no time at all, he was making our residents feel comfortable in their home. All the staff adore him and his enthusiasm for being a Carer.”
