The mark of The Star and Maltese Cross was originally registered in March 1682 by a Benjamin Rich. However, it is with Rodgers that this mark will forever by associated and they registered it in 1764.
Such is the trademark's renown that over the years, there have been a great many instances of unscrupulous companies copying the iconic design and applying it to inferior products. But here at eggintongroup.co.uk we have the privilege of owing and producing Joseph Rodgers knives with the trademarks and traditional patterns and methods used for generations of cutlers.

Our Limited Edition Joseph Rodgers Barlow to mark 260 years since the Star and Cross trademark is now available at eggintongroup.co.uk/product/joseph-rodgers-limited-edition-spear-point-barlow
This traditional brushed Barlow pocket knife with Bubinga Wood Scales, features a mirror polished spear blade, etched with a scroll highlighting the significant dates and the famous trademark.
To mark 260 years since the Star and Cross trademark was first granted to Joseph Rodgers in 1764, we are due to release a limited number of only 260 Barlow knives. These knives are made with some special history connected. The Barlow knife is the traditional shape made in the thousands by rural cutlers on the outskirts of Sheffield, notably Stannington, the bolsters deeply marked with the famous Star and cross mark originally granted to Benjamin Rich in 1682. The blade is a traditional spearpoint, mirror polished and etched with a scroll highlighting the significant dates and the famous trademark. The scales to this knife are bubinga wood bought from Sheffield cutler Trevor Ablett a few years ago. The knife is a brushed finish as many of this style of folder were. Made in small workshops on the outskirts of Sheffield, even the Rodgers family traced back to Stannington.
More details to follow.

This photograph was taken inside “Washington Works” on Wellington Street in Sheffield. It shows their warehouse. The women on the front benches would inspect, clean and oil-stone knives before passing over for packing on the benches behind.
George Wostenholm’s company had expanded rapidly due to their domination of the American market, such that it was moved in 1848 from Rockingham Works to the larger Washington Works.
Washington Works was the largest cutlery works of its time, placing cutlery manufacture under one roof of a reported 800 employees, and breaking with the established method of small scale cutlery production by Sheffield’s “Little Mesters”.
Earlier this week we showed you the raw Buffalo Horn in the workshop, here it is in all its glory, shaped and polished.
This Jospeh Rodgers Pruner is a perfect example of the beautiful lighter honey tones and darker shades of the natural material.
Buffalo Horn handle pieces - known in the trade as “scales.”
These scales are pinned to the knife handle then polished and shaped by hand by our craftsmen and craftswomen to reveal the beautiful darker shades and lighter honey tones the material.
No two pieces are the same meaning that a knife made with Buffalo Horn scales will be completely unique.
Buffalo Horn has been used for knife handles by Sheffield knife makers for centuries, and many of the handmade pocket knives in our Collections range feature this popular, traditional material eggintongroup.co.uk/product-category/collections
