What is functional movement really about?
The ability to move as nature intended with ease through multiple planes of movement. Think squatting, twisting/rotating, bending and stepping.

Our functional flexibility classes are designed for men and women to improve their overall mobility and core strength as well as learn tools to manage stress and anxiety in a really welcoming, supportive and more importantly fun environment. There is no age limit.
Our 6 week courses are suitable for all.

Nutrition plays such an important part in how we move our bodies but also in the way we digest certain foods. When we overindulge, don't consume enough fibre or water or simply are consuming not enough of the right nutrients our body starts to suffer. Including poor digestion, heart burn, ibs, constipation, diarrhoea, the list goes on. But stress can also be a major factor as well.
Aside from changing up our diet, finding movement can encourage peristalsis and get things moving. My go-to is always some twisty yoga.

***WANT TO IMPROVE HIP, KNEE AND ANKLE MOBILITY?***
If you have been struggling with yogi squat or malasana here is a breakdown for you to work into this posture with ease
Work on moving through stretches from frog Pose into seated frog Pose to release tightness in hip flexor and abductors (inner thighs); move into supported side lunge turning the toes up to find mobility in the hips and adductors; come into a forward fold with bent knees and practice bring the bum down half way and back up
On the blocks:
Start on 4 blocks or as many as needed to find yourself in a seated position
Practice firming your elbows inside your legs and creating pressure in your hands and lean forward lifting bum off the blocks, see if you can hold for a few seconds. As you grow more confident remove a block and practice again moving forward off the block till you are on just one block
Struggling with your knees?
Place a blanket behind your knees as you come down into the squat
Struggling getting your heels down
Place a rolled up blanket underneath, as you progress reduce the thickness of the blanket
A lot of us hold stored emotion / trauma in our hips. And for some of us simply training heavy can lead to feeling tight and stiff, whilst for others sciatic pain can literally be unbearable. Pigeon Pose is one of the most effective ways to release these issues by effectively stretching the glutes and hips and releasing tightness in the lower back.
1. Start off with the modified figure of 4 stretches.
Listen to your body and only stretch as deeply as feels comfortable
Work with your breath. This will allow you to go deeper into the stretch. For example: inhale through the nose for 4 secs and exhale out the nose or mouth for 6 secs. On the exhale this is when you can relax the muscles and sink deeper into a stretch/Pose.
For the box demonstrated stretch you could also use your staircase.
2. Graduate into modified versions of the pigeon stretch finding what feels comfortable to you. To get into this position start with your feet in front of you, legs bent, sat down just over hip width apart.
Sink knees to one side and pull the back leg back to create a square between your legs. Reach over front leg (supporting on either side if this is more comfortable or reach over shin and stretch.
3. Move into pigeon using a block to support your bottom. Don't force the front leg to be at right angles to the body just ensure the knee is behind the wrist. Slide your back leg back before sitting into the Pose.
Work with your breath and aim to slow down your breathing. Inhale and exhale out through the nose.

Then this workshop is for you!
You will work through releasing tightness and improving movement in the neck, shoulders and back. Reducing pain and learn new techniques that you can take with you after the workshop to improve your day to day life.
The workshop will be held at The Energise Wellbeing Studio in Chesterblade. Set in the countryside in a beautiful studio, just 10mins from Shepton Mallet, Evercreech and Bruton. There will be a maximum of 6 in the workshop. Mats, blocks and straps are provided.
