Congratulations to one of our most notable alumni, Adrian Newey, on his move to 👏

Earlier this year, the legendary Formula 1 designer announced his departure from Red Bull, and is now taking up a new role with Aston Martin in March 2025.

Newey said "I am thrilled to be joining the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, I have been hugely inspired and impressed by the passion and commitment that Lawrence Stroll brings to everything he is involved with,”

Join us for our Four-Week Online Mindfulness Course 🌻

🗓️ 8 October - 29 October
⏰ Tuesday afternoons, 1:30 PM - 3:30 PM
📍 Online via Microsoft Teams

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on the present moment, noticing thoughts and feelings without judgment, and becoming more aware of your surroundings.

In this course, you will learn formal and informal mindfulness practices, involving sitting meditations, gentle movement, walking meditation and bringing mindful awareness to everyday tasks. These mindful practices aim to bring greater awareness, clarity and concentration which can help us make better choices about how we engage with the stresses we experience in life.

The course will require you to attend online group sessions on Microsoft Teams for each week, as well as complete daily practice at home. It is suitable for beginners and those with previous experience of mindfulness. You do not need to have done any previous meditation.

🎓 Celebrating Our Students' Successes! 🎓

Allissa Goddard, who graduated with a BSc in Education & Sustainability, came from an underrepresented background and wants to help other students in her position flourish academically.

During her time at Southampton, Allissa had a place on the alumni-funded Ignite Programme. Ignite supports students from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to help them thrive.

Allissa got involved with the Student Advisory Board which allowed her to use her personal experiences to work with the University to help other students like her at Southampton.

🎓 Celebrating Our Students' Successes! 🎓

Rachel Sullivan, is a BA Music graduate, known for her unconventional compositions.

Rachel's work includes transforming pianos with foil-wrapped strings and creating interactive operatic pieces involving surprise audience participation.

Despite a health-related break, Rachel's creativity persisted. She's now pursuing a master’s in Compositional Practice at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, aiming for a career in composition, community music, and academic research.

Squadron Leader Liz Paxman, who graduated with a PhD in health sciences this summer, overcame numerous challenges during her five-year study journey.

Liz was recognised with a prestigious Associate Royal Red Cross (ARRC) by HRH the Prince of Wales for her work introducing frontline ambulance experience for Defence nurses, now a key Defence policy.

Throughout her PhD, Liz balanced two clinical shifts a week at South Central Ambulance Service and John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, alongside deployments to Kenya and critical care support in London during the pandemic.

Now equipped with her PhD, Liz, looks forward to applying her research expertise.

More than 40 teenagers from 25 local schools and colleges experienced life as frontline doctors at LifeLab’s summer school 🩺

They learnt clinical skills such as blood pressure and urine testing, met medical staff and students, learnt about anatomy, and visited medical facilities during the two-day programme.

All aimed at inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals 🏥

Music graduate Ben Qureshi spent a transformative year at the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris, becoming fluent in French and immersing himself in the local music scene.

During his time at Southampton, Ben conducted the Southampton University Student Orchestra. Having graduated with a BA in Music, he now plans to train as a music and French teacher at his old school, The Windsor Boys’ School, while continuing his passion for conducting semi-professionally.

Alice Daggett, a Wi******er School of Art BA Fashion Design graduate, finished her final year in style by winning the coveted Gold Catwalk Award at Graduate Fashion Week in London. This prestigious event is the largest showcase of UK and international BA creative fashion graduate talent, with graduates from over 50 universities participating this year.

Alice plans to spend the next few months building up her brand’s social media platform and website, finding a British manufacturer to bring her designs to life, and pursuing her passion for interior design by creating a fashion and lifestyle brand.

From bricklayer to professor to artist, Professor David Birks is graduating with a Master’s in Fine Art from the Wi******er School of Art, his second qualification from the University of Southampton.

Incorporating his bricklaying skills into his final project, Professor Birks created a large sculpture of an inside-out house, featuring bricks, woodwork, painting, and handmade tiles and wallpaper.

After a career in academia, including roles at the University of Strathclyde, University of Bath, and University of Southampton, he is now dedicated to his art in a small studio in Wi******er.

We are delighted to officially welcome Justine Greening and Lord Patel as our new joint Chancellors 🎉

🎓 Celebrating Our Students' Successes! 🎓

Lottie James, graduating with a BSc in Education, has dedicated her time at Southampton to campaigning for equity and opportunities for all – from setting up the first student Pagan and Witchcraft society, to pushing for better inclusivity.

Lottie championed accessibility and inclusivity on campus, by being involved in work and campaigns to improve the university’s inclusivity, such as ensuring all buildings are fully accessible, and that there are more gender-neutral toilets.

Beyond her studies, Lottie served as Disabilities Officer at SUSU and will continue her impactful work as Vice President of Welfare and Community post-graduation.

As an international student, Balaji Coimbatore Senthilkumar has dedicated his time at the University of Southampton to supporting fellow international students.

Balaji, who came from India, completed an internship with the International Office, gaining valuable experience in marketing strategies, public relations, and event coordination.

Graduating with a BA in Marketing Management from the Business School, Balaji's ambition to become a marketing consultant is stronger than ever, thanks to the real-world insights he gained during his internship.
