UoS³ is the University of Southampton's first CubeSat to be launched into space. http://www.esa.int/Education/CubeSats_-_Fly_Your_Satellite
Designed and built almost entirely by students, the mission is to gather GPS data to support re-entry prediction tools and take pictures of the Earth for outreach. The University of Southampton Small Satellite, or UoS3 for short, is the University's first CubeSat, and aims to capture data during its' time in space to validate re-entry prediction models. Started in January 2014 with two team member
CubeSat teams commence critical review of their satellite designs Two advanced teams participating in the second edition of the “Fly Your Satellite!” programme have just spent four days at ESTEC, ESA’s technical heart in the Netherlands. Their mission: to attend the Critical Design Review (CDR) workshop.
For the past few weeks, the interns have been working hard to get the final Data Package ready for ESA. With the deadlines fast approaching, we can share some of the simulations performed to assess the structural and thermal performance of the CubeSat.
The University of Southampton have written an article on the 's success at the Fly Your Satellite! conference - you can read it below:
Competition success puts University one step closer to satellite launch | University of Southampton The University of Southampton has won the backing of the European Space Agency (ESA) in its bid to put its own student-built satellite into orbit.
Last photo of the satellite before it gets disassembled for further antenna deployment testing!
The 2016/17 GDP graduate today - wish them luck!
Did you miss South Today showing the CubeSat this evening? Catch up on BBC iPlayer, and discover the impact will have on re-entry modelling and space junk, as explained by Southampton's Dr. Hugh Lewis:
is on BBC South Today in about 30 minutes - be sure to tune in!
The UoS3 received a visit from the BBC today! UoS3 was photographed as part of a news report on the project, to be aired on BBC South Today tomorrow evening. Be sure to tune in!

The UoS3 project has seven interns working through the summer to prepare it for the critical design review in the Fly Your Satellite! program. From system architecture to software and structural analysis, the interns are working hard to advance the CubeSat through the Fly Your Satellite! program.
Congratulations to the UoS3 2016/17 GDP after their Viva this week!
This year's GDP has continued the UoS3 project by advancing the CubeSat through assembly, integration and preliminary testing. They also submitted a successful Fly Your Satellite! bid to the European Space Agency and earned the UoS3 a free launch in 2019.
All of us in the UoS3 project wish to thank the 16-17 GDP for their work through the year and wish all the best to the GDP in their future careers!

Six new CubeSat missions selected for next cycle of Fly Your Satellite! Six university teams have been selected for the second edition of the Fly Your Satellite! programme after an intensive week of competition at a Selection Workshop held at ESTEC from 1st to 5th May. The selection was made by the CubeSat Evaluation Panel consisting of ESA experts from a ra…
While the team wait eagerly to hear the decision of the ESA selection team, here are a few photos from last week's activities, from clean rooms to materials labs to lectures:
Congratulations to the team members who delivered a flawless presentation to impressed European Space Agency experts at the CubeSat selection process today. We're keeping our fingers crossed until we hear the outcome!
Members of the team are preparing to deliver their proposal presentation to the CubeSat selection board at 17:00 today. Wish them luck!
The UoS3 team are being shown testing facilities and being given talks by ESA experts at ESTEC ahead of their mission presentation tomorrow. Can you spot the UoS3 team members being shown the shaker table facilities?
We'd like to wish good luck to the UoS³ - University of Southampton Small Satellite team, who will be visiting ESA - European Space Agency next week to take part in the Fly Your Satellite programme.
The team will have the opportunity to attend lectures by CubeSat experts, meet other European university teams, and present the CubeSat to the Evaluation Panel.
This week, the UoS3 team have been busy finalising their GDP report and preparing for the Fly Your Satellite selection workshop at the European Space Agency. Watch last week's antenna deployment test, after the UoS3 had a long stay in the vacuum chamber:
We are going to European Space Agency!! Our CubeSat has successfully made it to the Fly Your Satellite Final Selection Workshop at ESTEC on the first week of May. Here our team will have the opportunity to attend lectures by CubeSat experts, meet other European university teams and most importantly present the CubeSat, it's mission and positive impact to the CubeSat Evaluation Panel. This is a great achievement for the project and congratulations to everyone who made this possible! You can read more about the FYS programme here: http://www.esa.int/Education/CubeSats_-_Fly_Your_Satellite/New_opportunity_to_Fly_Your_Satellite
A week of testing: UoS3's internals came together this week to be tested in the thermal chamber and the vacuum chamber.
The UoS3 went through some thermal testing today to ensure that its' antenna deployment mechanism will work in the harsh temperatures of space.
Did you know that UoS3's structure was made in-house at the University of Southampton? Find out more on the website, or pop by the EDMC to see part of it on display!

Last night, the UoS3 team submitted its' official bid for a launch to the European Space Agency.
We will be waiting over the coming weeks and months to hear the result of our strong proposal; in the meantime, the current GDP team are moving UoS3 through its' final build and into testing.
The first cut of UoS3's structure happened in June 2015 - you can watch it below:
The UoS3 project has already spawned two conference publications, with a third on the way. You can read them on the website:
UoS3's current GDP are working hard to complete the final design of UoS3 and begin environmental testing. They've just received UoS3's structure back from being hard anodised for use with NanoRacks' deployment system on the International Space Station:
UoS3's power distribution system was designed and built as part of an Independent Project at the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Science Southampton, and forms a critical part of UoS3's on-board systems.
