Join our online academic research seminar. We'll explore how to capture the views and perspectives of young autistic children as 'knowers' in their own lives.

📅 Tuesday 18th May > 12:00

Book 👉 https://fal.cn/3faci?

The voices of young autistic children are rarely accessed or heard, often because their voices are considered especially 'hard to reach'. I'll talk about the process and findings of a project that aimed to challenge this position, which was co-constructed with early years' practitioners and families using an innovative Digital Storytelling methodology.

This session will be lead by Professor Sarah Parsons. Sarah Parsons is Professor of Autism and Inclusion within Southampton Education School at the University of Southampton, and formerly the Deputy Head of School for Research.

Join our online academic research seminar. We'll explore how COVID-19 School Closures have exacerbated the socioeconomic achievement gap.
📅 Tuesday 4th May > 12:00

The spring of 2020 saw a widespread and prolonged closure of schools across the UK due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Using data from Understanding Society, the UK Household Longitudinal Study, we analyse the consequences of school closure during the Covid-19 pandemic for the inequalities by socio-economic group in the uptake of homework in homes during the Covid lockdown, the learning loss at the end of the lockdown, and propose policies to mitigate the likely impact of the school closure on the learning gap by socio-economic group.

Join our online academic research seminar.

We'll discuss whether demonstrations, videos and textbooks are effective replacements for hands-on practical activities in a COVID-19 world.

📅 Tuesday 20th April > 12:00
Book 👉 https://fal.cn/3ewRg?

Practical work is a required element of GCSE science courses in England, but in 2020 opportunities for students to undertake hands-on practical work have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers must make difficult decisions about how to develop students' understanding of practical work safely, and how to prioritise curriculum time after 5 months of school closures. The qualifications regulator (Ofqual) is permitting students to observe demonstrations or simulations instead of doing hands-on practical work. This session will be lead by Alistair Moore, University of York. Alistair is the lead biologist for two large, research-informed curriculum development projects: Twenty First Century Science for KS4/GCSE, and Best Evidence Science Teaching (BEST) for KS3. Both of these projects focus on improving engagement, developing scientific literacy and the effective use of embedded formative assessment. I am also working on research into the teaching and learning of genomics in schools.
