What an enjoyable way to spend a sunny afternoon!

This week we had the privilege of visiting three 2024 RIBA East Regional Award-winning projects in Cambridge; Dining Hall by Feilden Fowles Architects, John Bradfield Court by Allies and Morrison, and WongAvery Gallery by Níall McLaughlin Architects.

Huge thanks to the South Essex Chapter, Homerton, Darwin and Trinity Colleges, and the architects for organising and hosting us.

Seeing our vision come to life will never get old.

Throw back Thursday to when we were involved in this exciting project! We achieved planning, provided technical design, and were the employer's agent for The Seaglass Building at Thorpe Hall School.

The Seaglass has brought a state-of-the-art sporting facility to this green belt location.

Last night SKArchitects walked away from the RIBA East Awards with not one but three awards for our Bluebird project! Taking home the Sustainability Award 2024, Regional Award 2024 and we were ecstatic for our client HARP who won RIBA East Client of the Year 2024. As you can imagine the SK office was extremely proud this morning.

We anxiously await the outcome of the National Awards and offer a big congratulations to Danielle Simpson the Project Architect and our Client HARP for Bluebird.

We are excited to be attending the RIBA East Awards this evening. Together with our clients HARP we will be keeping our fingers firmly crossed we will be bringing an award home for our Bluebird Project.

We are very proud to have been shortlisted for the RIBA East Awards 2024 and had the pleasure together with our clients at HARP, to take the jury round on their site visit on 6th March. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the announcement of the regional awards on the 16th May.

We are delighted that Bluebird has been shortlisted for the RIBA East Awards 2024. We look forward to welcoming the regional jury next month to visit the project and feel how warm, inviting and safe the whole development feels.

We did it!

We won Housing Project (up to £5 million) at the AJ Awards 2023 at the London Hilton Metropole last night.

The judges were immensely moved by this housing scheme. Not only is it unique to its place, built to Passivhaus standards and well-resolved, but ‘it has gone over and above on its social approach,’ they said.

We had a great time at the Essex Housing Awards last night and we are proud to say that we won the award for Excellence in Design & Placemaking.

Our amazing Architect, Danielle Simpson has also been shortlisted for The Mo Slade Rising Star Awards at the Essex Housing Awards 2023 tonight for HARP Southend (Official) project Bluebird.

We are honoured and very proud to be attending the Essex Housing Awards tonight at Greenwoods Spa and Hotel. We have been shortlisted for the Small Housing Schemes, Excellence in Design and Placemaking, and Meeting Housing Need for HARP Southend (Official) project Bluebird.

It was a pleasure working on this beautiful set of 5 arts and crafts inspired houses.

We worked with the client from feasibility and planning, into technical design, through to providing on site support. The house utilised the Nudura system, which was a great opportunity to use and see this innovative construction method in practice.

This was a lovely restoration project of a Grade II Listed Building in Southend on Sea. As part of the development planning permission was obtained to extend the property at 1st floor, create a rear terrace, install additional lead dormers, and replace the rear external staircase. We continued working on the scheme through construction to completion, working with the client and the contractor to develop this charming property. As part of the works, original features were reinstated including detailed coving, fireplaces and window reveals, plus the front elevation and the timber sash windows were repaired and redecorated, the internal layouts were remodelled and a rather tricky glazed stairwell was introduced.

We were honoured to be part of developing this new family home working with our wonderful clients from inception and feasibility design, a dismissed planning appeal against a positive officer recommendation, a redesign, developing the technical design and support through to completion of the construction phase of the project.

The project combines a buff brick envelope with detailed dentils and a cedar-clad linked block/annex giving a contemporary quality whilst responding to the traditional form of the street. The internal layout and key design features were central to its success; concealed sliding doors between the living, dining, and kitchen provide flexible living spaces, polished concrete floors throughout, and a large atrium in the hallway creates a feeling of grandeur as you enter the property, with a walnut feature staircase, corner window detail, and a rather snazzy fish tank wall.

We were appointed to develop a solution that would enable continued enjoyment of the sea at low tide along Southend sea front.

We worked with our client and various agencies to develop a lagoon which would retain an area of water all year round, for recreation and leisure use.

The engineered solution was dressed with large sculptural boulders that protrude above the sea level, and has become a distinguishing feature on the Three Shells Beach in Southend on Sea.

The scheme included the development of a toilet and shower block, the design reflects the quintessential beach hut and exploits the colour of seaside heritage with diagonal timber cladding.

What a great project to have been involved in! We achieved planning, provided technical design, and were the employer's agent for The Seaglass Building at Thorpe Hall School. The Seaglass has brought a state-of-the-art sporting facility to this green belt location.

Through modeling and sketching at the concept design stage this uncomplicated form was developed to reference the school's existing complex of buildings and the surrounding landscape. The polycarbonate cladding provides a lightweight modern covering, that allows the building to settle into the landscape whilst also being a striking addition to the school.
