SHS Virtual Summer concert 2021

The Sixth Form Prefect Team will be running tuck shops around the school field on Sports Day. They will be selling bottles of water, Capri Suns, crisps, pick’n’mix sweet bags, ice poles, lollies and more. The bigger lollies will be £1 and everything else will be 50p, so make sure you have some money with you on Tuesday!

'Great work with the ‘Song of the Day’! I have been installing windows 10 across the school since April, so music has been my ‘therapy!’. I am not sure If anyone else has chosen ‘Viva La Vida’ by Coldplay, but if they haven’t it’s one of my top 5 Coldplay songs! I have been a Coldplay fan for Years and like so many of their songs. The title ‘Viva La Vida’ derives from the Spanish phrase meaning “Long Live Life”, which I think is quite pertinent in these times. I find the song uplifting

'I would like to nominate "a whiter shade of pale" by Procol Harum as song for the day. I have chosen this in honour of my dad who sadly passed away recently after a long illness. My dad loved this song - he was a teenager in the 60's and this is a real 60's anthem. Listening to this brings back fond memories of my childhood - happy days growing up in Pinchbeck. We often listened to music and danced around the kitchen. My dad had a big collection of vinyl records and us kids would enjoy playing them on his record player. Later on we progressed to tapes,then CDs. It was always a house full of the sound of music. Music is great for reminding us of times gone by and of our connections with others. I know that when I listen to this song it will always remind me of my dad.'

'So yeah my favourite song. I used to listen to it when on my paper round, amongst his others on the tape which were all about how lovely it was that it was raining (which it always was, apart from that the papers would go mushy) I love this song, anyone who ever tried to play a guitar ever knows that Jimi was a genius, but this has beautiful lyrics too. It opens with

"Hurray I awake from yesterday"

which perhaps means less when you're young...

Mrs Martindale's name is Kathryn, so when I hear the opening:

"Hurray I awake from yesterday
Alive but the war is here to stay
So my love Kathryn and me
Decide to take our last walk through the noise to the sea
Not to die but to be re-born
Away from a life so battered and torn
Forever......... "

then that's us; not that our life is battered and torn or anything apocalyptic; it is a song set in the future. Hendrix died in 1970 but this was about the turmoil of the war in Vietnam 1955-75, but Jimi's imagination was beyond this dimension

lyrics such as

Cant be with us today..."

have meaning even when we aren't in lockdown

then you've got the whole merman thing:

though in some versions he sings (for lack of air was their main complaint) is some kind of escape? I think at this point in the song we are all going to live with the mermen....
