OOps forgot to post after PGM's meeting last week. The Kinder Ringers came in the afternoon and gave us a lovely rendition on their hand bells, including an explanation on how to ring the bells and - best of all, let some of our members have a go! Not as easy as we thought, definitely need more practise

What a wonderful meeting PGM had last Wednesday. Julia's 'Hawaiian Theme' was a great success with members, many of whom got my late WhatsApp message and came dressed for the occasion. After lunch we were entertained by Parkulule Players, a local ukulele group, who were amazing. Thoroughly recommend them- take a look at their page for more information.
At Poynton Golden Memories meeting today (11am-3pm @ Civic Hall) we are having an Hawaiin theme - come and join the fun with your loved one living with Dementia.
(You can always leave if you're not enjoying yourself 😉)

Hugging is definitely a wonderful way to communicate.
Make sure your lived ones living with Dementia/Alzheimer's are getting plenty of drinks. I found a straw is better and also prompting to take "just a sip". Judy x
Spotting signs of dehydration in the elderly - Dementia Help Dehydration can be an issue for the elderly. According to research conducted at the University of East Anglia, one in five people living in care homes are not drinking enough fluid. Even mild dehydration can increase the risk of falls, confusion, pressure ulcers and urinary tract infections. It’s ...
WOW, yet another amazing meeting. We were all programmed to wish our volunteer Helen our "bride to be" a wonderful start to married life - but she arrived late (brides are allowed - we forgot). All was not lost, she arrived in time to join in with Julia's celebrations which even included a wedding themed Bingo!
After lunch 'Pedals For All' brought some bikes down and although our members were reluctant at first, there was soon a queue to have a go. The bikes were amazing they brought a double "side-by-side" one, wheelchair one and a solo 3-wheeler. Our carer members were really excited at being able to take their loved one with Dementia/Alzheimer's on a bike ride either side-by-side or with a wheelchair in front - watch this space users of Middlewood Way - we're going to organise group cycling outings.
Please take a look at "Pedals For All" website they have lots to offer and its a really fun way of spending an hour or two in the wonderful British (Poynton) Countryside.

There is much to be found and valued on the dementia journey 💙
Hello to all of our followers! I wanted to re-introduce myself and give a bit of background about why I founded the business for those of you who may be new here.
I’m Diane, the Founder of Ambiance Care. Like many of you, I was a family carer for my mum when she was diagnosed with dementia.
Did you know that three in five of us will become carers at some point in our lives?
Caring for a loved one with dementia is a relentless, 24/7 commitment and can be life-changing, despite being unpaid with few - if any - periods of holiday or respite.
For most things in life there’s a recognised gateway you can go to for help and information. Caring is not like that.
Instead of a one-stop shop you’re confronted by a row of doors leading only to another row of more doors and sometimes dead ends.
Carers often don’t come into contact with services until they reach crisis point – which is scary considering that health and social care is the only ‘official’ gateway to help and support.
So here’s the first problem carers face: finding out what it is you don’t know. And this is where I can help.
I’m a qualified social worker with over 25 years’ experience working in health and social care services, with personal insights not just from my mum’s 15 years with dementia but from the multitude of others I’ve met who are living with dementia along the way - and their families.
Ambiance Advice is half of the service we offer, headed up by me. I’m here to answer all of the questions I had when I was in your position, because I know that the journey of dementia can be scary, confusing and frustrating - but it can also be meaningful, filled with love and laced with humour.
💙
Poynton Golden Memories Group is all about "sharing the caring". We are a social support group for those living with Dementia and their spouse/carer. Next meeting 15th May, 11am-3pm in the Main Hall at Poynton Civic Centre. No need to book, just drop in for a warm welcome. X
The second Poynton Golden Memories trip on Mary Sunley today was another great success without any hitches. Thanks to Lesley and Mary for doing 'galley' duties.
Please can we all sign this petition to get Dementia on the Agenda at the next Election.

A belated post of PGM's meeting last Wednesday, 1st May, when Julia (Dance, Relax and Remember) had a Pirate Theme. Bless our members for rising to the occasion coming dressed in pirate costumes or willing to adorn some of our hats, wigs or other corsair costumes. We even had a few walking the 'plank' albeit at ground level!
Next meeting 15th May when Andy will be entertaining in the afternoon.
The first of Poynton Golden Memories Group 2024 Mary Sunley Canal Boat Trips was a resounding success last Friday, 3rd May. Despite a few last minute cancellations (more food for the rest of us AND our wonderful crew - Skipper Phil, 2nd Victor and 3rd Jess) it didn't rain but wasn't quite warm enough to sit out on deck. However a great time to chat with those on board and 2nd in command, Victor, divulged some of his wealth of information on canal history - if I remember correctly, the Macclesfield Canal was instigated by Lord Vernon to provide a direct link between Manchester, the Potteries and the Midlands.
Poynton Golden Memories members won't have to wait a whole 2 weeks before meeting up again - come along to this event on 2nd May (the day after our next meeting) and enjoy a cuppa and cake with friends whilst raising funds for Dementia UK. I understand the raffle has some tremendous prizes - will this be your lucky day??
So true, your tone of voice makes such a difference.
Definitely true. You'll only get angry trying to correct, go with them and enjoy. Even if you don't know what the hell they're talking about, try a few "oh really's" or "tell me more's" and you might find out. Don't forget their words get jumbled but every 4th or 5th one might make sense.
DEMENTIA CARER WELLBEING PROGRAMME
The programme supports carers by developing resilience, knowledge, skills and confidence as well as enhancing coping strategies, developing new ones, sharing experiences, having some respite and gaining peer support from others in similar circumstances.
There is also a volunteering opportunity within East Cheshire Hospice to support this programme. To find out more about how you can get involved, visit here: https://www.poyntontowncouncil.gov.uk/_VirDir/CoreContents/News/Display.aspx?id=68897
This is so, so true. Always smile at your loved one (even through gritted teeth), talk in a loving tone, your demeanour is everything, hard though it may be. J xx
