Tough day up north guiding for Ed…

Strong wind, gale force sun and next to no water. We managed to find a few sippers and even put a few in the net 😊

28/03/2024

Not exactly ‘guiding’ as such but you’re always ‘on duty’ when it’s your job, even when just fishing with a friend… this is “Oxford” Dave with his first fish of the year (a humble PTN doing the damage on a euro rig - dropper)

26/03/2024

When you take a regular client and good friend out and all he wants is a pike on the fly… it genuinely doesn’t matter how big it is, just that he catches one… so here is Alec’s current fly-caught PB pike… as I told him: ‘well mate, it’s beatable for sure’ 😂😂😂

09/01/2024

When your regular client Alec ups the ante and says “I want to catch a 3lb grayling”….

As a responsible guide you come out with the usual stuff like:

- rare beasts mate…
- not many of those around…
- not many places where they grow that big…
- needle in a haystack stuff…

And then you only go out and nail one at the first attempt! 😊😊😊

I genuinely don’t know who was happier, angler or guide. And I genuinely don’t think he knows quite how special this fish is…

Nothing beats the F terrestrial when trout are sipping under the trees in the summer months…

Something special about piking with a great pal in crap conditions, but with the pair of us accepting it and getting on with the three-dimensional jigsaw that is ‘working it out’ on the day.

Great stuff Graham. Three landed apiece but so many more chances all session kept us both on our toes 😊

Good angling mate and see you soon 🐊🐊🐊

Two lads up from la-di-dah Chalkstream-Land and I took them WAY out of their comfort zone today onto a big and nasty flooded Welsh Dee 😊😊😊

Add in a new fly fishing technique in euronymphing and what happened? They caught fish of course (☺️) and a few nice ones too.

Well done gentlemen. Brutally tough conditions today and you’ll catch plenty if you fish like you did today when conditions improve 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

14/11/2023

Straight back into ‘work mode’ after a minor tussle with a falling tree yesterday and John C absolutely nailed it today on only his third ever crack at the grayling on euronymphing gear. Nicely done mate and will see you soon 👍🏻

Three grayling novices on the Welsh Dee. John, James and Tori all getting in amongst them on the euro-nymphing gear. Fun in the sun. James sacrificed his iPhone to the river gods, Tori and I fell in, (separate occasions), and John C was the only one going home relatively dry (with James going snorkelling for his iPhone) 🤣🤣🤣

🤣

Three lads who had never fished for grayling before. A big river, clear and fining down but still too high and too cold…
First ever stab at euronymphing. And fish for all of them! Top day out gentlemen and a special thanks to Paul for bringing a cheeky bottle of red to accompany the luncheon 😊

23/10/2023

River in the fields a day or two ago? No matter. Owen filled his boots today (given the conditions and the cold water)…

13/10/2023

More ‘Old Git Eyes’ “indicator” dries for Alec and his mates…

04/10/2023

Never underestimate the power of the amber tag 😉

15/08/2023

Seems like a lot of folk want these ‘nasty purple things’ atm… 😊😊😊

15/08/2023

Alec again… can I have some balloon caddis for ‘Old Git’ eyes?

Here you go mate! Should be able to see these while riding a galloping charger at two in the morning! 😊😊😊 - (aided and abetted by the Neon Pink Ultra Dry Yarn from Fish On 😉😉😉)

13/08/2023

Some ‘midgey stuff I can see with Old Git eyes’ he asked for…

These should do just fine tied on the Fish On Curved Fine #16

Standing by for the photos of your fish captures now Alec 😊😊😊

25/07/2023

Inspired by a friend to carry on tying (I was gonna give up after three!)

A gaggle of Purple Nasties ready to swim. With the extra water in the Manchester rivers just now and a lot of it coming down off the peat bogs of Saddleworth Moor, this should tick quite a few boxes…

Dark silhouette, silver bead, UV purple thorax, what’s not to like?

Getting a swim one day this week… let you know if (when) they score 😉

Top day out on a local stream with Antoni brushing up his nymphing skills. A few tweaks on the limited technical stuff he’s managed to glean from various YouTube videos and he was catching fish… a lot of fun and so many questions! Kept me thinking all day long which is a good thing I reckon 😊
Go practice now mate and I’ll see you for a tune up later…

Two brothers - Sean and Pete - today who had never picked up a fly rod in their lives… a dodgy forecast with a lot of rain about… what could possibly go wrong? Well, precisely nothing as it turned out!

Showed them the duo and the Spanish Nymphing set-ups and let them loose. They were both into fish from the off. Lots of small trout and grayling with a smattering of much bigger trout thrown in (the camera was elsewhere when the better trout were landed unfortunately!)

Finished the day with over 50 fish between them when rain and thirst finally stopped play and three happy lads repaired to the pub for a well-deserved post-match pint 🍺 🍺🍺

Good angling boys!

Inclement weather for today’s casting lesson with Mike on a rising and colouring River Irwell. Raining throughout and getting more and more ‘biblical’ as the lesson went on, we knew it was time to call it quits when the thunder and lightning intensified overhead and the hailstones hit the size of marbles. Some much improved casting though fella! Nice one!

A couple of decent barbel for my good mate and client Dave who made the long trip north in search of some bronze torpedo-shaped bruisers. Blessed with the weather and we had a load of back up smaller fish… he’s used to holding 8oz trout and grayling so forgive the obvious ‘trauma’ in his face while he tried to hold these beauties up for a pic 😂😂😂

What a great day out with the England Ladies world championship team (minus Sheena who had to work)…
Nymphing techniques in the morning and dries in the afternoon. Well done Sam, Lianne, Louise and Gwyneth. And best of luck in Canada 🇨🇦

Not a bad one to snare as your first ever fly-caught river fish! (Shame a previous captor hadn’t given it the handling and respect that we did, but there you go…)

An absolute pleasure guiding for Darren today on one of my local rivers. A veteran of the lakes and reservoirs, he was totally new to river fishing so needed handling with ‘kid-gloves’ 😊

Starting with a basic duo set-up we looked at likely fish location within a complex set of currents, where to stand and where to cast. Drag avoidance was high on the menu throughout. The pictured fish took a #16 black beaded PTN which can’t have been far off representing the olive nymphs that were hatching…

As the hatch intensified we went trying for a dry fly fish, at which point (he would tell you himself) he realised that casting a dry on a #3/4 rod into a slight breeze with an air-resistant fly isn’t as easy as chucking out a lure on a #7/8 with the wind behind you 😊 Casting needs a bit of work for sure, but saying that he did hook the monster of the day on the dry (probably 3-3.5lbs) that was obviously camera-shy and released itself at range…

The rest of the day (after a brief flirtation with a Martin’s Minnow) was given over to euronymphing tuition (I hate that horrible Americanism but it seems to have been taken up by the whole planet now so I’m farting against the thunder…) More success with fish in the net rounded off a top day and we even managed a pint at the end 🍻

See you again mate

Three absolute killer sedge patterns for a Devonshire mate set on some Dartmoor action this summer

Photos from John Tyzack Fly Fishing's post 08/05/2023

Out with Tim today for a refresher after a few years out of fly fishing. Took to fishing the Spanish leader quickly and effectively and put a good few fish in the net. Dry fly worked too but the casting was a bit ‘rusty’ 😊
Practice makes perfect mon ami. See you soon 🎣🐟👍🏻

18/04/2023

Some hi-viz Retirer sedges for my good friend and client Alec, who my his own admission has ‘old git eyes’ 😂😂😂

Neon Pink Ultra Dry Yarn sighter should see you right mucker 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Out with Dave on an impromptu try for early season dry fly grayling. Arrived in a decent hatch of LDO, to which unaccountably, they were NOT rising…
Nymphs then IF we absolutely have to!
Small stream late-grayling-season magic nonetheless 😊😊😊

Now taking bookings for the forthcoming trout season…

Photos from John Tyzack Fly Fishing's post 02/11/2022

Very cold, very wet, very windy on the Welsh Dee today. I’d been very concerned about the conditions with which the lads would be faced after their respective (very) long drives…

I had a cheeky little tucked-away bit of river in mind and boy did it produce!!!

Worth all my worry and lack of sleep to see Owen, Nick and Will net upwards of 20 decent grayling in ridiculous conditions. Well done fellas 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Dave from Oxford was up north again wanting some grayling fishing. Not easy after all that rain recently! Having scoped out a few rivers and abandoned them without a cast we eventually found one that hadn’t yet coloured up. The water column was full of leaves giving false ‘bites’ on many casts, but we also managed to find a few lovely small stream grayling
