A brief sideways step into the world of paper with Japanese photographer Ikko Narahara’s early 70’s contribution to the revered Eizo No Gendai series.
Born in 1931, Ikko Narahara was one of Japan’s most influential post-war photographers. Known for his evocative and atmospheric photographs of isolated communities and later documenting his travels throughout Europe. On this first edition of the influential Eizo No Gendai series (also host to photographic giants such as Daido Moriyama, Masahisa Fukase, Tomatsu Shomei ++), Narahara sees two of his exhibitions collated into one book. The first is ‘Domains’, which captures time spent in an isolated Trappist Monastery on the island of Hokkaido in the early 1950s. The images capture an enigmatic atmosphere of remoteness and seclusion. Time stood still. His subjects appear detached, ambiguous and almost indoctrinated. Heads bowed in ritualistic service, shadowy figures set into chalky light and the vacant stares of the monks - almost as if looking through the photographer. It speaks to the human condition, asks questions and leaves the answers open ended.
The second set of photographs is from a series called Within The Wall which is set in a female-only prison in Wakayama prefecture. Similarly with the Monastery, the subjects are isolated and removed from society. Narahara again captures the essence of these spaces that few would ever get to see through magical compositional work. The contrast and juxtaposition between the of the aspects of both these separate lives of enclosure is beautifully and hauntingly elicited through Narahara’s imagery which feels suspended in time. A truly special artwork. Rare!!! We love books too so hopefully have more soon. (1st edition - with original OBI (slightly torn), in nice condition but some light wear).

NEW DANCE RECORDS ON THE SITE
Time passes on another year.
We’d like to extend a huge thanks to everyone who’s supported the store this year and big shout out to all the artists, distro’s, labels, posties, venue owners and most importantly CUSTOMERS who keep this delicate little ecosystem of underground music ticking, for which we would be so lost without.
We’re increasingly left jaded by the whole charting thing but for us, this year was the best for new music since we started this whole thing. Things like Fiesta En El Vacio, Erik Kramer, Megabasse, Static Cleaner Lost Reward, Kou, Christian Mirande, Searchlight Moonbeam, Izumi Hirakawa, Tsuki No Wa, Colette Roper, Delphine Dora, Lo Escucho, Lo Pinto, Ssabae, Graham Lambkin, Nina Harker and SO MUCH MORE that we’re melting down just trying to remember, made this year almost bearable.
We’re off for Xmas lunch at the pub now, mainly to complain about everything / everyone we’ve ever met but more importantly to celebrate the birthday of Dean (the reason why your packages now arrive on time) - he’s accepting e-pints at [email protected] all day.
More of the same next year no doubt
THANK YOU
Last batch of dance bits of 2023 up on the site

Just added a nice batch of some of our favourite new releases of the past few years - the first taste from an *incredible* collection we acquired from a loyal customer and friend of the store with exceptional taste. LOTS more to come from this lot.

Tonight on . Live recording from the birthday party at a few weeks ago.
** Newsletter unleashed **
Hello from Stockport,
Biggest thanks to everyone who came down to the 4th B'day party at Soup last Saturday - it's good to see Soup basement so packed out. All was well until the tragic POWER CUT which sliced off the final two hours. I guess we'll have to wait until next year to have Bitzer take us into the 5th dimension.
The chill in the air here signals the undisputed end of summer. The traditional July / August distribution blockage seems to have cleared and we're holding more amazing new releases than we can remember in recent times.
The past 8 weeks for us has mostly been spent floating to the music of MEGABASSE. So much time in fact that we've managed to coax an entirely new release out of him for our own label which is very much MUSIC FOR LEVITATION.
Also very last restocks of that AOTY Salenta & Topu, outsider weirdness from Orion Music Workshop and a new Pretty Sneaky. Racks are STACKED.
Lastly anyone in London next weekend be on the look out for the ANA 5th birthday at Spanners club.
Until soon --->>>

Summer looms and today is bittersweet as we have the newest yet final Peace Pipe mixtape in our 10-strong series.
Each unique in their experiential take on club music over the past 30 years, these mixes have become fabric of the store, but all good things must end. Huge love and respect to Mix Master Rollo () who's invested so much time putting these together and has proven to be a human archive of house, techno, downtempo and the peripherals.
Due to popular demand, we have the entire series back in print for a limited time only, if you missed out on any, now's the time.
The party is over, but the memories grow old.
Some new tapes up online, (not loads, pushed for time today!). A few favourites from Robert Cox’s excellent Unlikely label, including the never seen LeLu\Lu’s cassette. That Charlesworths is crazy and sounds like an even trippier take on the cosmic SAB record on Vanity. Another from sought-after artist Peter Tedstone and enigmatic German compilation Atmosphere & Empathy. The creme de la creme of crusty home electronics recordings - editions of uno, check the site.
