Driver’s risk £1000 fine if they have a medical condition on DVLA’s list and do not report it
There are more than 100 health conditions that drivers must inform the DVLA about or they could face a £1,000 fine. These are medical conditions that "might affect your ability to drive safely".
It's not optional - it's a legal requirement for all drivers. Plus, if you have an accident and your health condition might have played a part, your insurance might not cover you.
Car experts at Swansway Motor Group said telling the DVLA about your health conditions helps make driving safer for everyone. The DVLA has a long list of conditions that you might need to tell them about.
This includes things like cancer, diabetes and neurological disorders, reports the Mirror. If you're not sure whether you need to tell the DVLA about your condition, Swansway Motor Group says you should ask a healthcare professional.
They added: "It's better to stay on the side of caution and ensure compliance with DVLA regulations to avoid potential legal and financial repercussions."
After you've told the DVLA about your health condition, they might decide if you can keep driving based on what you tell them, get in touch with your GP or consultant, arrange for a local doctor to check you over, or ask you to take a driving test, driving appraisal or eyesight test.
It's key to remember that having a medical condition doesn't automatically mean you'll lose your licence. If your condition doesn't impact your ability to drive safely, you should be able to continue driving.
You might just need to make some changes or adaptations to your car. The DVLA may also give you a shorter driving licence for one to three years and will then review your case again when this licence ends.
List of medical conditions that you to tell the DVLA about
Diabetes - for diabetes, it's crucial to tell the DVLA if:
1) Your insulin therapy extends (or is expected to extend) beyond three months.
2) You experienced gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy), and your insulin therapy persists beyond three months postpartum.
3) You suffer from incapacitating hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), or a medical expert has warned of the risk of its development.
4) Cancer - for cancer or lymphoma, it's important to tell the DVLA only if:
5) You encounter issues related to your brain or nervous system.
6) Your physician advises that you may not be fit for driving.
7) You're limited to specific vehicle types or require vehicle adaptations due to your condition.
😎 Your medication induces side effects that could impact your ability to drive safely.
Other conditions on the DVLA list include:
