Have you visited Earsham recently? You may have seen us hard at work reinstating and welding the piles in place on the River Waveney for the Environment Agency. We do enjoy working on jobs like these that benefit the community and it’s good to work with such a great team of guys!

When installing a mezzanine or indeed a extension (as per our recent customer requirement) ensure you have considered ‘bracing’.
‘What does bracing do’ - I hear 👂you ask?!
Bracing provides one or more of these functions:
🔴Control buckling of main beams,
🔴Load distribution
🔴Dimensional control.
A Tie bracing system or strap beam is used to connect beams and distribute the vertical bending effects between the main beams, and resist lateral forces (wind / collision) so they are shared between all beams. They can also protect against horizontal force. Tie beams sometimes bear all stresses due to eccentricity of the columns in the footing. They work as fixing members to decrease the supported length of the column.

Sometimes our jobs are like buses🚌One rather different mezzanine to the last… Creating additional office space in a warehouse in Suffolk. Makes so much sense to utilise the space above rather than externally (we can even quote for the staircases (internally or externally) to suit all requirements!) Simple & effective 🤷🏻‍♀️ in this busy world - why make things harder?!

Did someone mention ‘Vents?’! Large or small. Internal or external. We all need ventilation ducts/grilles. Ventilation ducts are conduits used in heating, ventilation and air condititioning, to deliver and remove air in a space to improve the quality. Gable roofs are a classic design in British architecture. With their sloped sides and pitch, this style of roof has become one of the most-wanted features in home design and so achievable. As you can see from the pictures of a local, recent job, a gable roof is achieved by forming 2 flat sides with join together in an inverted ‘V’ to create a roof ridge and pitch. It’s is designed so water/snow can run down the slopes into gutters (perfect for the UK weather!🌧️🌨️)

Pretty neat eh?! Would you believe that this isn’t timber…? This is a type of steel called ‘COR-TEN’. More specifically it is a high strength, low alloy structural steel created to resist abrasion and corrosion.

The brand name is inspired by its two key properties; CORrosion resistance and TENsile strength. COR-TEN
🧐
Developed by mixing a particular combination of steel and alloying elements, COR-TEN® steel is known as 'weathering steel' due to the protective layer of rust that weathers - and protects - the material. This protective rust ‘patina’ on the surface prevents further corrosion from penetrating deeper in to the metal.
This is our latest bespoke / custom made COR-TEN creation but this steel was originally used for rail 🚂cars and it became used in the 1950/60s for outdoor art installations due to its natural weathering and durability, as well as distressed aesthetic.

It’s often used as cladding, but we’ve been commissioned to make a variety of items including art installations.
We love using COR-TEN® steel for a number of reasons:
It’s Low maintenance: Rusting to form its own protective layer, it requires no upkeep. This is one of the reasons it is often used on bridges that would be difficult to access.
Longevity: The rusted layer provides protection for the exterior layer of the home and lengthens the life cycle of the material - it should last for centuries!
Aesthetic: We l❤️ve the texture, the patina and the rusting process that turns it a glorious rich burnt 🍊orange🍊 colour.

We had a huge honour recently to be involved in the er****on of two large innovatory stained glass works to be on exhibition, not in a gallery, museum or cathedral……. but free standing in a wild flower meadow! Sandlings Sculpture Garden in Suffolk.

AN Fabrications undertook the task of making the frames for the works in the meadow to showcase the stained glass panels interaction with the surroundings. The stained glass transmits, reflects and absorbs light that has travelled ninety-three million miles and that is continually being renewed. The panels are subtly faceted producing changing angles of refracted light.

Super excited to show the progress in one of our projects. Great example of steels inside a timber framed building using ‘fitch’ plates.
‘FITCH PLATES’ -
A fitch plate is designed to be sandwiched between two pieces of timber, held together by bolts to form a ‘fitch’ beam. As you can see they are slotted between two wooden beams bolted together.

**LONG TERM PROJECT ALERT**🏗️🛠️🦺
So we’ve recently begun an exciting project down in deepest darkest Essex. Fitting new aluminium windows into structural openings in tower blocks. Weather has not been on our side the last few weeks but now suns out and spring is in the air we’re full steam ahead!💐🌸🌺🌷🌻 We will be here for the foreseeable future so give us a wave if you see us….!!

When Crusty Corner Bakery in Norwich asked us to make some bespoke frontage for their new shop…how could we refuse??!! ‘Piece of Cake’ 😜🥸🤪we said! Using thin steel sheets.
