The Rainbow Hub
We are an LGBT+ Community Centre, with Cafe and Bar. A safe space to hangout and meet people.
A slightly late addition to the Sunderland Arts & Culture Trail, these beautiful pieces by Peter Roman now grace our walls. Showcasing the intricate textures of q***r relationships, these pieces offer a window into the profound beauty of q***r love and the contrast of feeling invisible.
Come and see these pieces first hand and get a feel for the emotions they invoke.

On the eve of pride, we're handing over to the Community Engagement Officer of The Sunderland LGBT+ Network for an important message.
Addiction is something that unfortunately plagues the LGBT+ community. Whether it is something we find ourselves prey too, led into it by bad circumstances or people, or something we use as a coping or distraction technique, addiction destroys lives.
We know you can often feel alone, and don't know where to turn too, but you are not alone. As someone who has known addiction on a family basis, things are never irreparable and sometimes all you need to do is to take that very first step.
The Sunderland LGBT+ Network is not a recovery service, but we're proud to be Gambling Awareness Champions and Drug & Alcohol Awareness Champions with the amazing services NECA and Wear Recovery - Change Grow Live. This means we are a non-judgmental safe space where we can be a compassionate ear to those in need of help, and point you in the direction of appropriate services if you need them.
Don't suffer addiction in silence. Speak to somebody today.

Yesterday we had a beautiful day at Sunderland Minster helping them paint their banner for Pride on Saturday!
Sunderland Minster is an extremely inviting and inclusive place of worship. Reverend Jacqui is especially excited to turn out and tell our community that Sunderland Minster is proud of you.
It is good to see places of faith, that previously might not have been a welcoming place for LGBT+ folk become a safe space for us, regardless of beliefs. Some of our service users have previously spoke about their faith, dismay with some churches, and how some have left their faith behind over the challenges they face in that setting.
Not everyone is the same. Faith might not be something everyone experiences, but it should be something that everyone is free to have
Happy to be able to show a few people the film Pride (2014) today! Showing the connection between our deep rich mining cultural history and the LGBT+ movement is vital to me.
I watch this film every year and the first time I haven't cried by the end!

The Sunderland LGBT+ Network and The Rainbow Hub are proud to be presenting to you: Pride (2014)!
The Movie will start approximately 1pm at The Rainbow Hub on Saturday 22nd June. ยฃ1 is payable on entry.
This emotional tearjerker of a film has been selected by our Community Engagement Officer - Mark. He would like to tell you exactly why:
"Pride for me was such a monumental film in my LGBT+ education. I had the privilege of watching this the night before my very first pride parade, down in London in 2015. The film tells the story of a group called Le****ns & G**s Support the Miners, and how they came to raise funds and have a close relationship with mining communities during Thatchers mining strikes in the 80s.
The film itself is inspirational, showing the reality of being LGBT in the 80s. It lets us peek into the life of a young and fresh activist who faces struggles at home with his parents. A seasoned and jaded activist, who became the 2nd man in the UK diagnosed with HIV, and is currently the longest surviving HIV patient. A young Le***an anarchist. And an entire town full of Welsh miners who adjust to their newfound friends.
By the end of the film I was filled with so much hope, so much emotion, and of course so much pride.
Little did I know that the next day, during the pride march, I would meet face to face with LGSM themselves. Here they are, still flying the banner and everything they stood for. Their work is often cited as one of the initial dominoes that led to LGBT+ rights and eventually Marriage laws becoming entrenched in the UK. Standing in front of me were the real life people I had watched a dramatisation of only the night before. The people I had to thank for being able to exist as I do. All I could do were to hug all the members, old and new. I have no doubt they were probably confused, but I was just overcome with such emotion!
Returning to the North East after pride was sobering. Coming from a region steeped so richly in mining culture, it really gave me a new lens on which to view our region. Attending Durham Miners Gala a few weeks later, it gave me an appreciation, that somewhere I had previously felt apprehensive and unsure of, was a welcoming place. We had faced the same government oppression side by side.
I was delighted that day to meet LGSM yet again! Since their work, many colliery groups take part in London pride, and various pride marches around the UK. And LGSM make the trip up for the Durham Miners Gala. Thankfully, this time I was able to articulate myself better!
Both the film, and meeting these LGBT+ Heroes gave me a new drive, and a new purpose which I carry to this day, 9 years on. I watch Pride every year as a reminder of what I want to bring to this community, and this year I would like to invite you to watch it with me. Please, bring tissues because you might well shed a few tears!"
