What an amazing weekend it has been!!!
Thank you very much to all who turned out and supported this very special weekend, the atmosphere and buzz of excitement in the air was palpable.
First known as Veterans' Day, the first National event was held on Saturday 27th June 2006. The date was chosen as it came the day after the anniversary of the first investiture of the Victoria Cross in Hyde Park, London, in 1857. The event became Armed Forces Day in 2009, and is now held annually on the last Saturday in June.
Armed Forces Day is an occasion to reflect and honour the valuable contributions of service personnel, veterans, and their families. We join thousands across the UK to mark Armed Forces Day, paying tribute to service personnel, families, veterans, cadets and the fallen.
Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday each June, which fell this year on 29 June.
It is a chance for us to show our support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to Service families, veterans and cadets.
It also marks the culmination of a week of celebrations, beginning on Monday 24 June, when the public show their support and appreciation for the Armed Forces community. It also includes Reserves Day (26 June), which provides the country with an opportunity to recognise our Reserve Forces.
There are many ways for people, communities and organisations across the country to show their support and get involved, and this is our way of doing just that!
Showing support for the Armed Forces provides a much-valued morale boost for serving personnel, veterans and their families.
Supporting our sailors, soldiers and aviators goes beyond Armed Forces Day.
In fact, the Government, local communities and businesses across the UK have committed to supporting Armed Forces personnel past and present by signing up to the Armed Forces Covenant, which many in our great city have already done.
This event is ran and organised by Veterans and their families and we are thankful to Sunderland City Council, Safe Events, for their continued suppor and assitance with funding to ensure the event is able to go ahead.
Over the coming days we will be sharing all the pictures we've been able to capture of the weekend.
Pease feel free to share yours in the comments or PM us and we will share them.
Thank you all again.
Kelly & John

Many Thanks to the Durham Army Cadet Force for joining us at this year's event.

It was fantastic having the Armed Forces Bikers - The North Watch join us at this year's event.
All your bikes are amazing and thank you very much for the support.
A brilliant display of 18th century rifle drill from East India Trading Company Living History Group.
We may have had a few showers and grey clouds overhead, but we've all had a great day 1 at this year's Sunderland AFD celebrations.
We'll do better with the pictures today, it's been very busy and have only been able to get a few today.
For all supporters of our Armed Forces, Serving, Veterans, Cadets and Families - See you today if you can make it.
Merry Christmas to all our serving personnel and their families near and far.
