Bio-Blight Environmental
Welcome to Bio-Blight Environmental.
Did you know that bedbugs are almost 250,000 years old, and originated with cave dwellers co-habiting with bats.
Last week we supported a number of local customers with bedbug treatments. Here are two of our favourite pictures that we took from last week.
The little black marks you see in the corner of a room are blood spots which is commonly found with infestations of bedbugs and can be an early indicator of an infestation within your home/business.
It was found that the bedbugs associated with this infestation were migrating from neighbouring rooms of the property around the edges of the carpet.
In the second picture, you can see an adult bedbug which we found on the wheel of a dressing unit drawer.
When providing treatment, it is important that you look at the property as a whole to ensure that all stages of the bedbug life cycle are treated. This can include looking in places such as curtains, TV remotes and plug sockets, all of which we have found bedbugs in the past during our treatments.
These two customers both opted for Pesticide free treatment. Using the Cimex Eradicator, we were able to find and treat the entire infestation in both properties, where both customers are now happy to be bedbug-free.

This may appear to be a picture of some mud and holes in the ground, however, this picture is the result of finding the source of another 3-year infestation.
Our new client had recently parted ways with another local pest control provider where they were unable to find the source of an infestation within the property.
Through routine monitoring and control, with the use of tracking equipment, we were able to establish that the rats had been entering the floor void through an old defective drain point. π±
Once identified, the client arranged for the entire floor to be removed, where extensive drain repairs have now been made, denying the rats any future opportunities to gain entry to the property.
Another source of pests found, and one happy customer, who has now decided to join us for routine monitoring of pests for the foreseeable future.

We were recently contacted by a local business owner who was looking to change pest control providers following ongoing activity with rats. πππ
Whilst it is common for rats to remain at ground level, we must never underestimate the climbing ability associated with rats, which can be evidenced in our most recent finding.
This client had been suffering from rats for the last 2 years, and upon our free survey, we found that the rats were entering the building via the flat roof guttering.
Using a snake camera, we were able to identify that this hole led directly into the wall cavity of the business, where the rats were able to migrate to other areas of the property.
A quick set cement repair, and the rats have now been denied entry at this business for good.

One of the tools that is always in our kit bag is a UV torch.
Although we would usually use this torch to identify rodent droppings, it is also a fantastic tool to identify the areas of your kitchen where cleaning is being missed.
Where cleaning opportunities are missed, this provides an ample food source for pests such as flies and cockroaches, which can allow them to survive and thrive within your building. πͺ°πͺ³
One of the best methods of preventing pests, is to ensure that clean and tidy environments are maintained.

Today, we are working on the weekend to support our clients who have rat infestations in their roof voids, as they are tied up with work commitments on weekdays.πππ
We were called out today to attend to a case of rats being heard in a bathroom roof void. Unfortunately, like most bathrooms, there was no access panel to reach the roof void directly. However, we were able to gain access by removing a light fixture and using a snake camera to identify the rat activity.
Upon further inspection, we discovered that the ongoing rat activity had started to gnaw on the electrical wires associated with the bathroom light. If the outer plastic cover of the wire is breached, it poses a significant risk of fire and electric shock to the residents of the property.β‘οΈπ₯
After successfully eradicating the rat infestation, an electrician was caled to fix the damage that the rats had caused, where the entire bathroom roof had to be removed.

We recently received a call to attend a property where garden ants had infested the ground floor of a house.
We took a quick picture to show one of the ways we control ants.
Since the ants were found inside the building, we could not provide direct treatment to their nest, which is probably located underneath the building's structure. In such cases, gel-based baits are commonly used for effective control.
This particular gel insecticide is highly attractive to ants and starts working almost instantly after application. Due to its chemical composition, there is a slight delay in the mortality of the insect, allowing the ant to return to the nest and spread the poison to the rest of the colony, including the queen. This stops the production of eggs and eventually eliminates the entire colony.
If you are suffering from ants or any other pest species, book a free survey today
Moreover, the insecticide gel is bio-activated, (by the ant's metabolism when consumed) meaning it has a lower environmental impact compared to other forms of treatment.

Today we attended a new site for one of our existing customers following reports of rats that have been causing chaos!
Upon arrival, we found rats had made themselves at home within a small flower bed, where significant runs and burrows littered the environment.
Rats are nocturnal by nature, however, it is common for them to be active during daylight hours when competition for food is fierce amongst the local population.
The rats have been attracted to the waste bin, exploiting the nice rat-sized hole where a b**g is meant to be.
Although the bin has previously been fitted with wire mesh, this is no match for the rat's strong teeth and determination to feed under pressure.
After sitting down with the client, we have established a bespoke programme to suit their needs:
π10 Plastic Rat Bait stations - for trapping equipment - this prevents access from staff members, the general public and other forms of wildlife.
π10 Snaptraps - An environmental risk assessment has identified domesticated animals foraging within the area, resulting in a non-toxic form of control throughout the property.
π Knockdown Programme - A quick succession of visits to eradicate the rodent's presence quickly and efficiently.
πAnnual Pest Prevention Programme - Routine, regular visits to ensure the rats do not return and re-infest the property and surrounding areas.
If you are suffering from rats and require a comprehensive programme to eradicate your pest infestation, please do not hesitate to reach out to us for a free survey.

Today we attended a callout for one of our letting agent partners where one of their residents was concerned with wasps that had started to fly everywhere around the garden. πππ
When I arrived on the scene, you can imagine my surprise when there wasn't a single wasp/insect in sight! ππ
With no insects to ID, this did not stop us from investigating the activity further where we found these small little holes that had been left behind in the soil of a raised planter.
These small holes belong to a buffish mining bee, which is a spring-flying bee and is one of the first solitary bees to be seen at the beginning of the year.
This species of bee is a fantastic pollinator and is a great addition to a garden, where they usually pose very little risk of harming people when given adequate space.
The residents are happy to live with the bees for the year, where they will survive and thrive pollinating the flora within the local area.

Did you know? The air bricks installed on your property which allows your building to breath provides a perfect sized hole to for mice to gain entry directly to the void areas of your building.
From this location, mice are then able to access multiple areas of your building where the infestation can very quickly develop through thier rapid breeding behaviours.
Vent covers can be installed on your property which can allow your building to ventilate whilst preventing future instances of infestation.
This job was carried out for one of our clients who used our services to clear an internal infestation, and wanted preventative measures installed to prevent future re-infestation.

Another internal rat infestation cracked by the Bio-Blight Environmental team. π our new customer here has been suffering with an internal rat infestation spanning over a 1 year period.
Over this period, rats have been gaining access via a small hole in the kitchen wall from the rear garden.
When proofing the building, we found that no further activity internally was found, whislt external rat activity remained high!
We managed to seal them out closing the proofing recommendation found during the initial survey.
Unfortunately the rats did leave a large amount of smear marks and bacteria as a result of the activity, of which we removed using specialist sanitisation equipment, removing the smell of the rats from the kitchen for good.

Another long term rat infestation picked up by the Bio-Blight Environmental team, stretching over a two year period. π±
Another source of infestation confirmed. β
οΈ
The small details can make or break the case when investigating the source of your rat infestations.
A quick review of this customers inspection chamber, 3 rat droppings were found on the benching confirming rat activity within the drains (highlighted in red).
A further inspection of the benching found a small defect where rats have bypassed the pipework and have gained access to the internal areas of the building (Highlighted in white).
A collection of waste in this area is a perfect water / food collection point for the rats, both attracting them to the area and sustaining thier presence.
With a repair complete, we have another customer walking away with a very big smile on thier face. π

DID YOU KNOW? A mouse will squeeze through a gap of approximately 6 millimetres! π± π

Although this door appeared to be in good condition, at floor level, a large gap has been found where the frame of door has deteriorated.

Can you spot the tiny holes in the wood?
These holes are created by a species of woodworm, where they can survive inside the wood for many years.
The larvae will digest the inner workings of the wood, where they can cause significant damage, and in some cases, can cause structures to collapse.
When the larvae pupates into an adult beetle, it is common for them to migrate to neighbouring timber, causing a wide spread of the infestation.
Reactive infestation and preventative treatments are avaliable at Bio-Blight, reducing the risk that these insects create to your property.

Run a business? When was the last time you checked the bottom of your waste bin?
Your waste bins are fitted with a b**g to allow liquid to drain but keep the contents inside. These are commonly removed or are damaged by pests such as rats to gain access to a 'supermarket' of food consisting of your food waste! These gaps can also attract pests such as flies, and can become a major breeding area.
At Bio-Blight, we provide through inspections, ensuring small pest opportunities like this are discovered before they become a major issue.
Bio-Blight tip - it is your waste contractors responsibility to ensure that these are fitted, and are usually replaced free of charge!

DID YOU KNOW? A rat's Incisor teeth (Front teeth) never stop growing.
They grow up to 5 inches a year and need to chew on objects to prevent problems with their teeth.
This gnawing behaviour is the source of the rat's destructive nature and has been identified by the insurance sector as being responsible for 25% of fires within properties where they chew through electrical wires.
A major rat infestation within the localised area of our client has encouraged rats to forage around the business and gnaw through the base of the door to allow for easy forms of access.
Following a discussion with our client, we have installed aluminium plating. This covers the initial access point, and a barrier against the rat's super tough teeth, providing a heavy-duty proofing solution against rodent gnawing and foraging behaviours.
The aluminium plate has been cut and fitted to the size of the door-specific requirements.
For your free survey (Business & Home) to see how we can protect your property from pest activity, please do not hesitate to reach out to us and we will always be happy to help.
