Almost home after a brilliant 9 days travelling around Laikipia in northern Kenya 😁 I have been lucky to meet some inspiring people and see some amazing camps and wildlife on my journey - even if I did miss Giza the melanistic leopard at Laikipia Wilderness … 🤨 Got to get back to see my beautiful Bruno -and get some work done!! ❤️ Can’t wait to see Jon on Friday 😻🦒🐘

Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Laikipia has a good number of spotted hyena and a few very shy brown hyena - which are more difficult to spot. June is a great time to view babies and there are many clans of spotted hyena with babies of all sizes dotted across the plains.

So - Jon is heading down to Australia tonight (from Terminal 5) and I am sooo excited to be flying to Nairobi (from terminal 4) - and on to Laikipia tomorrow! I will be visiting two new conservancies, staying at some new camps, experiencing some walking safaris, and if i am really lucky - spot a melanistic leopard!

I think I definitely have the best option - beam me up Scottie!!

Today we have learnt that Makumba - the dominant silverback caring for the last habituated lowland gorilla family in Dzanga Sangha National Park in Central African Republic - has passed away.

Makumba was aged 45 - it is common for older dominant males to be challenged by younger silverbacks - sometimes resulting in the loss of life. This is especially sad for the park as the other two families of lowland gorillas are not yet fully habituated meaning that gorilla trekking in this pristine part of the Congo Basin will stop for a few years until the next family is fully habituated and ready for visitors.

I visited Makumba just a few weeks ago and spent an hour with this beautiful primate and his family. There are still alternative good reasons to visit - Dzanga Bai is world famous for its research into forest elephant communication and spending a day on the platform watching the forest elephants digging for minerals and socialising is reason to visit alone. Then there is the pristine rainforest, birding, the Sangha River, the bai walk, mangabey monkeys, the valley of the giants and cultural interactions with the local Baka tribes. Or just simply immersing yourself in this stunning natural environment ❤️

"We have just returned from our fourth holiday put together by Sue at Tracks Safaris. Due to the success of the previous three we did not consider going elsewhere for our arrangements this time. We get a really personal service tailored to our interests and requirements from an expert who takes the time to understand what we would like to see and do.

Our trip far exceeded any expectations we might have started with. Our wildlife encounters were outstanding with numerous tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gharials and amazing birds. I have just spent the last 10 days in the Central African Republic staying at the wonderful Sangha Lodge perched on the Sangha River - deep in the rainforest in the calm south west of the country.

Access is via Bangui - the capital of CAR - which is served by Air France, Ethiopian Airways and Kenya Airways. The flight into the rainforest is via a regular WWF light aircraft flight of just over an hour, which flies in WWF staff working in the area.

With opportunities to trek to see lowland gorillas and spend time watching the forest elephants congregate at Dzanga Bai, this little corner of the Congo Basin is an absolute must for wildlife enthusiasts and ornithologists.
