The beautiful Church of All Saints Selworthy on Exmoor during a recent QI. Conservation Architect Miriam Kelly and Part I Architectural Assistant Joe Shadrick undertook the inspection and made good use of the drone
Time for a civilised afternoon break after a day of condition reports
Inspection on the south façade of the Castle St Michael’s Mount, which is perched on the cliff so particularly difficult to access. Pointing implemented 18 years ago by Cornish Heritage Builders was found to be in great condition. This phase of work is focused on repairs and refinishing historic windows, alongside repairs to lead and cast-iron downpipes. Part of ongoing cyclical maintenance around the castle, ensuring it remains in good repair and able to withstand the extreme coastal weather
A pin up crit in the Devon studio. The team reviewed barns and church reordering. Always useful to review together and discuss
We are thrilled that our Dartmoor National Park historic farm building repairs project has won the Heritage Project category in the RICS South West Awards 2024. Well done to all the winners and shortlisted projects
A zen calm space to relax. Underlighting to this marble bath creates a dramatic focal point while also creating a subtle calming space in which to unwind

Thought to be the smallest parish church in England, Grade I listed Culbone Church in Somerset which is dedicated to Welsh saint Beuno, is only accessible on foot down a narrow track. A contemplative location for a quinquennial inspection
What a view from the top of All Saint’s Church, Brixham from the quinquennial inspection. Accidental green roof and the harbour beyond
This beautiful barn has been brought back to life using traditional methods and materials. See www.jonathan-rhind.co.uk for more information or take a look at www.berrybarndevon.co.uk
The team had a look around the stunning Exeter Cathedral on their DAC day. The 96m medieval stone vault ceiling is the longest in the world, with incredible gothic carved bosses. A beautiful place to visit Exeter Cathedral
Several of our Architects and Architectural Assistants attended the DAC Church Architect & Surveyor Training Day in Exeter last week. A really useful event covering subjects such as heritage at risk, carbon net zero, and quinquennial reports Thank you Diocese of Exeter
Class Q permitted development legislation sets out the criteria for changing buildings and curtilage land from agricultural use to dwellings. Our latest blog looks at the criteria and other options such as the fallback position https://bit.ly/classq
The sustainability measures incorporated into this new build in North Devon are complemented by the client’s vision for the exterior landscape with natural Devon hedgerows and meadowland for wildlife habitats. There were no planning requirements for Biodiversity Net Gain, but this has certainly been achieved. https://bit.ly/new_build_biodiversity
Congratulations to Senior Architectural Technologist, Peter Thompson, who has attained CIAT Conservation Accreditation - recognising the skills and knowledge gained from many years working with listed buildings and sensitive conservation sites https://bit.ly/CIAT_conservation

Sketch ideas for the renovation and remodelling of Grade II listed terraced property in Conservation area on the Devon coast, to create light, open plan living space connecting with the garden
Colour, texture and geometry - rubblestone boundary walls and steps, with construction of summerhouse beyond. A roof-over scaffold allows the contractor to make progress in all weather, which being on the coast, can be quite challenging
The team hard at work in the Somerset studio
On a recent site visit to Cornwall, Architect Simon Horler had an issue with nosey neighbours
Planning permission has been granted to extend the living accommodation of a grade II listed five-bedroom farmhouse, with the conversion of an adjacent historic threshing barn to create more living space. Read more about the challenging planning issues here https://bit.ly/planning_issues
