We were privileged to be asked to attend the national Country Markets Ltd AGM today with a selection of some of our crafts, and to share ideas about how we display our goods. It was really lovely to meet members from many of the 140 (approx) other markets across England and Wales and find out how they are doing. Each one is unique, and it is inspiring to see how they are tackling the challenges we all face as we endeavour to bring our customers the very best in home made, home grown, locally produced items.

It’s rhubarb season folks!

We love these porcelain tiles by Judy. They are frost proof and would look stunning as part of an outdoor kitchen setup!

Did you know? All our stock is locally grown, cooked or crafted with an emphasis on traditional skills, seasonality, and ethical practices. If you are a vegetable grower, baker or bird box maker and would be interested in joining our co-operative, drop us a message for more details?

Our shop was built in the 1840s and is Grade 2 listed. Our windows may rattle, but just look at that view!

We may still have the old sign, but we’re NOT the WI (but we used to be!) We’re a Country Market. There are Country Markets scattered across England & Wales, but we are the only one with a permanent shop.

Anyone can join as long as they are over 16 and have 5p for their membership application.

Did you know? We are a co-operative, not for profit organisation & everyone you see working in the shop is a member

If tills could talk…! We served our first customer in 1931 from a stall in Corporation Street, and we moved to our current position in Bath Place in 1937.

There are Country Markets scattered across England & Wales, but we are the only one with a permanent shop. We think this gorgeous painting by Margaret Glinn perfectly catches the Bath Place vibe!

Our shop building in Bath Place is full of quirks and historical character, as you’ll know if you’ve ever tackled our steep & twisty staircase! It’s worth the effort though, when you see the lovely original cast iron fireplaces we’ve uncovered, and the tiny triangular cupboards dotted here and there. It was built in the early 1840s, and over the years has housed dressmakers & ladies outfitters, green grocers, a stone mason, nurserymen, bootmakers, a sewing machine dealer, a tobacconist, a second hand furniture dealer, & a needlework shop! There were even rumours of some very amenable ladies renting one of the upstairs rooms. If these walls could talk…
