Child Therapy Telford
Helping Children And Teens Navigate Their Emotions, Feelings And Thoughts to Lead a More Positive Life!
Hi I’m Louisa, I am motivated to make a difference to the lives of children and young people. I help navigate young peoples emotions and behaviours to lead a more positive life!
🎈I recently had the opportunity to conduct a session that involved using colourful balloons to help a young client better understand and express their emotions. Each representing a different emotion. 🥹😃😡😫🤒🥳😍
We carefully inflated each balloon and discussed the characteristics and physical sensations associated with that particular feeling. For example, we might have inflated a yellow balloon to represent happiness, talking about how a happy feeling might make the body feel light and energised. Out came the pens 🖊and on each balloon they drew a facial expression on what they thought matched the emotion and colour.
Then, we moved on to the balloon popping 📌 As we carefully popped each balloon, the child and I discussed how that emotion might manifest physically and what healthy coping strategies they could use to manage those feelings. This hands-on, sensory experience helped the child make a tangible connection between their internal emotional experiences and the outward physical expression of those emotions. 🥹😃😡😫🤒🥳😍
🎈By using balloons as a visual 👀and tactile ✋🏽tool, we were able to build the child's emotional vocabulary 💬, enhance their self-awareness, and develop effective coping mechanisms – all while keeping the session engaging and fun!
Meet the face behind Child Therapy Telford
👋I'm Louisa, a licenced NLP4Kids practitioner and I help children understand their emotions to lead a more positive life! Let me tell you a little more about me...
I use Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to overcome my fears and anxiety. That experience lit a fire in me to help others facing similar challenges and I wished I knew about these strategies when I was younger!
💔Facing Reality
The long waiting lists for mental health support is hitting our nation hard.
As a parent, being asked by my then 11-year-old daughter what is self harm at such a young age fuelled my determination to make a difference.
👣Walking In Their Shoes
Going through my own struggles at such a young age and recently discovering my neurodiversity has given me a deeper connection with the children I work with.
🏔Overcoming Challenges
Educating parents about my role has been tricky. I clarify that I'm not here to fix children but to give them practical tools and strategies.
The child's motivation for change is key.
☺️The best part of my job is seeing quick improvements in a child's well-being.
Their positive change keeps me motivated.
🏵Qualities That Matter
As a Practitioner, being patient, building quick connections, and showing empathy are essential.
🤝Building Trust
I listen without judgement, finding common ground.
Trust and connection are vital.
😍Impactful Moments
One parent shared with tears, "My child likes school now." It's moments like these that make me want to continue to make a difference. When I need a moment of reflection and renewed focus I read my testimonials from previous clients.
📖Always Learning
Gaining my licence with NLP4Kids was a stringent process.
Assessments, case studies, CPD and collaborating with a great team help me stay on top of child and teen mental health.

🤔The last few weeks I’ve had a lots of conversations with clients and there has been a common thread… ‘’What if’’ 🔮 I feel like I need to get a T-shirt with it on! 👚 ‘’What if I see somebody I know?’’⁉ ‘’What if they laugh at me?‘’ ⁉‘’What if I can’t do it?’’ ⁉ I then turn this in to a fun game, we turn the ‘’What if’’ and think of something really funny and crazy! 😆and it’s great to hear all their creative ideas on ‘’What ifs’’ This is an actual strategy- cognitive disruption, by introducing humour disrupts rigid thinking patterns associated with serious beliefs.
When someone laughs, their brain shifts focus, allowing room for new ideas💡 and perspectives, 👀then they are more open to come up with a more helpful👍 reframe of the situation.

Child Therapy Telford has moved (well kind of...) all be it to the ground floor, still in Wellington,Telford close to M54 Junction 7. Easily accessible from Wolverhampton, Newport, Shrewsbury. Bridgnorth, Oswestry, Much Wenlock and more. Although I don’t just limit myself to West Midland locations, I also offer online sessions too. 👩💻
I'm glad to share that I've made some updates to my therapy room to make it even more accessible and comfortable for my clients. It’s also has had the seal of approval from my 12-yr old daughter too.
Firstly, I've made sure the space is fully wheelchair accessible. ♿This was a top priority to ensure everyone can easily move around and access the room.
I've also introduced some sensory Philips hue lighting that clients can adjust to their preference. Whether you need warm, cosy tones or cool, energising hues, the lighting can be tailored to match my client’s mood or the time of day and year! ☃🌙🎇🔦
I now have a big screen - I can now show example videos/clips and use it as an alternative to my hand-held whiteboard. 🖥
Of course, I've kept the comfy chairs, pillows, games, fidget toys and colourings. And the beloved sloth named ‘Goliath Snoozy’ in the tree is still hanging around! 🎋
Above all, I am still offering a 🧘♀️calm, confidential, and judgment-free space for children, teens and young people to feel at ease. Privacy blinds can be easily adjusted allowing clients to see out without people seeing in.
And finally, introducing ‘Coconut Convo Colin’ 🗣and his thought-provoking question cards hidden inside his head, ready to spark interesting conversations and self-reflection. I know he's a bit of a wild card, but that's all part of his charm, so far, I’ve had mixed reviews some like him and others are not so keen.
I'm excited for all my current and new clients to experience the new and improved therapy room.
Should Coconut Conversation Colin stay or go? 🥥 👎👍
To ‘Be’ List - I must admit as a busy parent I love a To Do list so I thought I’d share this to anyone who needs a reminder today 🙌🏻
Here is a really important thing to remember; your brain's primary function is ensuring your survival. In order to do this one of it's most important jobs is to detect and respond to threats. From an evolutionary perspective there is very little benefit in looking on the bright side. It's better to be safe than sorry. This is known as a negativity bias.
This was great when we were cavemen and there were multiple threats in our environment. But in our modern world, in which things are generally safer but far, far, higher-paced our brains have a lot of information at process, and they are naturally drawn towards the negative, because it is most likely to present a risk.
So when we focus on negatives our brains are doing what they are supposed to do. But it isn't helpful to anxiety levels, mental health or our relationships.
It takes effort to hang on to the positives, for adults and for children. That's why at the end of a great day out the bit that your child remembers best might be dropping their ice cream, and the bit you remember is the tantrum that followed.
But we have a choice. We can choose to override this negativity bias. By being aware of it we can choose to focus on the good parts of a day. By openly talking about it we show our children how to change their focus as well.
The summer holiday is a great time to start focusing on this because we all know that "making memories" is not as simple as the hashtag suggests.
👉According to a 2021 report by The Prince's Trust, nearly half (48%) of young people in the UK aged 16-25 said their mental health has worsened since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. 💔
This statistic highlights the significant mental health impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on teenagers and young adults in the UK. Nearly half of this age group reported a deterioration in their mental health, underscoring the disproportionate burden young people have faced during this challenging time.
The Prince's Trust is a prominent UK charity that provides support and opportunities for young people, including those facing mental health challenges. Their annual Youth Index survey tracks the wellbeing and outlook of 16-25 year olds in the UK.

Action for Happiness - August Calendar! Love each month when these are released.
❓Which altruistic 'action's will you be doing?
💡Altruistic is an adjective that describes behaviour that is motivated by unselfish concern for the wellbeing of others, rather than by self-interest or personal gain.
👉Altruism is considered a prosocial behaviour that can have positive impacts on both the giver and receiver. It is a highly valued trait in many cultures and philosophical/ethical frameworks.

Is MOVING....(well kind of😉)
🙌Confidence is a critical component of a child's overall well-being and development. When children lack confidence, it can hold them back from reaching their full potential and pursuing their dreams. Utilising NLP techniques can be a powerful way to help boost a child's self-assurance and inner belief in their abilities.
NLP focuses on the relationship between neurological processes🧠 (neuro), language (linguistic), and behavioural patterns (programming). By understanding a child's thought patterns, language, 🗣and behaviours, as a NLP4Kids practitioner I can help identify and reframe limiting beliefs that may be undermining their confidence.
Through techniques like anchoring,⚓ reframing,🖼 and visualisation,👓 as a NLP4Kids licenced practitioner I guide the child to access and strengthen their own internal resources and positive self-image. This empowers the child to overcome fears, and approach challenges with a mindset of self-belief.
😁July 17th is World Emoji Day🥹 I want to share how emojis can help when working with little ones who are struggling to find the words to express their feelings.
For many children, opening about their emotions doesn't come naturally, especially when they're nervous😟 or unsure of their own inner experiences. That's where my new emoji pillow helps! 🫶
When a child first comes to see me, they may be feeling shy🫣, anxious, 😥 or simply unsure of how to articulate what's going on for them🧠.
Rather than putting them on the spot and asking them to verbalise their emotions, sometime its useful to start our sessions by inviting them to snuggle up with my emoji pillow. The emoji faces can be interpreted as - happy, sad, mad, scared, confused, and everything in between.
I encourage the child to simply point to the emoji that best matches how they're feeling in the moment. No words required!
Once they've identified their initial feeling, we can start to explore it further. What made them feel that way? How does that emotion show up in their body? What helps them feel better when they're experiencing that particular feeling? 🗣
The emoji pillow can take the pressure off verbal communication and gives the child a comfortable, non-threatening way to connect with and express their emotions, especially when we first meet. And from there, the therapeutic work can really begin to unfold. 🙌
Although, perhaps not the summer weather we would like for this time of the year🌦️. I recently received a bouquet as a thank you from a recent client. Don’t you think there is something about sunflowers that reminds you of the sun or even a smiley face!! 🌻

I do have an actual dartboard in my therapy room (safety one of course) when the need arises I sometimes use this to start a session or mix things up instead of sitting in chairs. Keeping score is not my strong point but hey this shows that we all have something to work on and I also remind clients a lot! that FAIL is an acronym in First Attempt In Learning 🎯
As a practitioner who works with children, teens, and young adults - both neurotypical and neurodiverse - I'm committed to tailoring each session to the individual's unique needs. This 10 year old was struggling with emotional dysregulation and peer interactions due to ADHD tendencies, has now gained a better understanding of himself and acquired practical techniques to manage his feelings. After only 4 face to face sessions 😮 at Child Therapy Telford the mum says that he feels happier, 😁more even-keeled at home, and empowered with coping strategies. This is also a testament to his incredible effort and perseverance. 🫶
