Balance has always been a challenge - and I don't just mean in the studio. We'll all agree finding balance in life is just as tricky at times. It is something that has to be practiced if you want to improve... in your food choices and exercise, in the amount of time spent at work vs at home, in self care vs taking care of others, in choosing your mood and attitude.

And sometimes, to find your balance, you need to let go of holding on so tightly and trust that you've gor this!
Coming up to full summer, let's all reassess and relax.

Today I decided to treat myself to a gorgeous Rose & Pistachio cupcake and coconut iced coffee from the lush in Tunbridge Wells. Not only did I support a buzzing local business, but also did it guilt-free, which is a new experience I'm coming to terms with. Gone are the days where I counted calories - even a sprinkle of cinnamon wasnt overlooked and had to justify itself! No, Im not the ripped 40 year old body with a 6-pack and 16% bodyfat anymore. Neither am I the insecure and overweight 20 year old.
I am somewhere in the middle now. But Im defo up there in terms of happiness and am learning not to guilt-trip and chastise myself every time I enjoy a glass of wine or a treat. Trust me, I still work hard in the gym and in my classes... I just got better at balancing it all.

Neutral spine vs. Imprinted spine:

The difference between these spinal positions and knowing exactly how to achieve them is key for safe exercising during Pilates.

NEUTRAL spine mimics the natural standing position - with better alignment - where there is a slight natural curve in the lumbar spine (lower back). The p***c bone should neither be higher nor lower than the hip bones. Often in Pilates, you will be asked to start in 'neutral spine'. Most exercises start in this position, especially when one or both feet are on the floor. πŸ‘‰ It is especially important to assume neutral spine when lying in supine with both legs extended, to ensure your ribs ard 'tucked' ie. not protruding and causing and extended arch in the back.

If you are new to Pilates, an easy method to check that you are in neutral spine is to form a triangle with your hands (thumbs and forefingers touching), placing finertips on pelvic bone and palms on hip bones. The triangle should be parallel to the floor.

IMPRINTED spine combines a slight posterior pelvic tilt and elongates the lumbar spine. Your instructor will often initiate this position by syaing 'tuck under' meaning tilt your pelvis as if you are about to start a bridge position or 'pull your navel towards your spine and press your lower back into the floor'.

Imprinting stabelizes the hips, activates the obliques and protects the lower back when you elevate both feet unsupported off the floor.

What is Pilates? Why is it so popular? Is it right for me?

To clear a common misconception, it is not "like yoga". I could write a comparison, but instead I will tell you a bit about Pilates. The full-body exercises are controlled, coordinated movements with strong focus on the core and pelvic floor muscles (think of the group of trunk and hip muscles that form a corset around your waist). It is low-impact exercise form which improves posture and alignment, mobility and flexibility (at any age!) strengthens muscles and joints, and is often recommended by professionals for rehabilitation and/or injury prevention.

If you a prone to lower back pain, have poor posture, joint pain, have injuries, want to increase your flexibility or just try something new, then contact me for trial session.
