James Paints Plastic
Welcome to my blog. I am learning to paint and sharing my hobby.
I had this idea to create the most over the top ultramarine dreadnaught that I could possibly could.... and I think I did it 😅 I call it maximum Ultra and that kinda sums it up! After painting so many necrons this year its refreshing to paint something with big FLAT sides! I hope you like it!
Warhammer 40,000
I am really happy to have won my stores armies on parade today with my necrons! 😁 All the entries were amazing!
This tomb world is going to keep growing next year, the army is far from done!
It's nearly finished! This project has been a ton of fun and I am looking forward to taking some proper pictures. I am fairly happy with the heads now, they have been repainted 3 or 4 times because they looked more like an ostrich 😅... what do you think? I also want to write ultramarine on the top of the banner but I am a bit nervous! Words are hard!
The lascannon arm is nearly done. The varnish had a bit of a reaction and it's gone cloudy in the recesses and dulled the highlights. I can fix this later with touch ups. I find lettering really hard need more practise. . but I think its ok from a distance.
The missile launcher arm is in progress. I am happy with the texture of the banner. Ready to paint over when I finish the design.
The body is nearly done. I added big flames because I thought the exhaust was boring! Needs some more highlights but almost happy with them now. I imagine that in battle the power plant will be turned up to full power! Very loud and shooting flames 🔥 it's imperial tech...
I also think the bright colours on the exhaust help balance the model.
Hope you like it! Loving the project and hoping to finish it next week. I have a lot of work to do for my army's on parade board.
Taking a quick break from my necron 'build queue' (not a shame pile...) to build an ultramarine dreadnaught. This is for my local GW's space marine painting competition.
I am going for FULL Ultramarine! Retro, Free hand on every panel, covered in purity seals.... totally over the top Ultramarine 😅 with the ultras, you need to go big or go home.
This is how far I have gotten with the first arm. Should finish it tonight. I am tearing through this so more progress updates soon!
It's finished! I wanted to try and make something different, so I hope you all like it 😄
I took my daughter into my local WARHAMMER shop last week. The manager was really nice and gave her a choice of free mini to take home and paint! She was really excited and held the box all the way home ❤️
We did it together and I showed her layering, washing and drybrushing with a different model. This is ALL HER OWN work with the colours she chose. It was really nice painting together !!
W.I.P round 2! (Round 1 on last post) I am gradually building up the weathering and OSL effects! Loving it.
More pictures will be added to this post as I make more progress.
A very early W.I.P on a side prodject... It's not much to look at yet but I have big big plans for this!
I decided to quickly paint up a few scarabs between projects. I have tons of unpainted swarms (W.i.p pictures in comments) I painted the bases first, and I think it was a lot easier that way.
....It would have been even easier if I hadn't glued on the scarabs! 🤷... 🤣 live and learn. The fastest two squads of anything I have ever painted!
It's finished! This was really nice to paint. I really love how this model looks. Hope you all like it 😁
WIP. I sat down yesterday and finally took this off the shelf. Its been in primer for a whole year 😅 I cant believe how much progress i made in one go, Its over half way done already! Very nice model to paint.
It was a nice change to pick up a big dry brush after weeks and weeks of painting with a size 1. I really love these colours!
The ghost Ark is finished! These are a lot of work to paint... I think I will have a long break before starting a Doomsday ARK 😅
Even with your expensive daylight hobby lamps, and ring lights on tripods.... the best lighting is always a wall infront of a window! 😅 what do you think of this style of this picture? compared to the black background? Which do you prefure 🤔
My first space marine is finished and I really enjoyed painting it! I am definitely looking forward to painting the rest of the combat patrol. For work in progress shots follow my page. Thanks, I hope you like him!
I got to sit down for a few hours tonight and make some progress on the arm!
WIP update. It dosnt look a lot different... but the details and refinements take ages! Really happy with the progress. Honestly dreading the face! 😅
I am having a lot of fun painting this space marine. I am really glad I got a leviathan box now. I am also glad I chose ultramarine. Some would say its a boring choice ..... but I think that if you paint them in your own style, then they don't have to look generic 🤷 I also just like blue 🤣
I am thinking of making a short tutorial, or a time lapse of me painting something? Hopefully thats something you might want to see? I think it could be fun to try and make something like that 🤔 maybe...
It was really nice to just sit down tonight and stat painting a new model. I have been playing around with colour, and I have finished the first leg. Really enjoying something different.... even if it's still blue! I need to use some other colours...😅 I have some guardsmen to paint...they won't be blue 👍
It's Finally done! I am REALLY proud of this! It nearly broke me a few times... but I absolutely love it 😅 I have learned so much from working on this. I can paint NMM with a lot more confidence now, and I am definitely better at glazing. What next? 🤔
Heavy Destroyer. These are great, love the giant guns! I have to more of these ready to paint.
Skorpekh squad. I love these models, some of my favorite Necron sculpts!
Another warrior squad complete! The horde is growing! warhammercommunity
Necron overlord 🙌
This thing is so close to being finished now! It feels like i have been working on it forever.
This project nearly broke me a few times, but I absolutely love it. Next pictures will be the final photo shoot
I hope people don't mind these reels I am just playing around with it! I know it's all pictures you have seen before. I promise I will start uploading new stuff soon!
The music might be a bit cheesy...but I don't know 🤷♂️ I didn't want anything to crazy or to boring 😅 feedback welcome... even if it's stop messing around with reels and actually finish painting models 🤣
I have started working on the back. I have put off doing this part for ages because I wasn't sure what to do with this shape. What do you think? I need feedback before I do any more blending 😅
What do you think of the base? I think it might need some violet for a bit more colour?
Last night I slapped some texture paint on the void dragons base. That stuff can take hours to dry, so I picked up one of these and started painting. They are nice models and I think it looks OK so far, its only a test. I have a few cool lords and wizards but it's better to practice on the troops first. What do you think? I think the colours are OK. The weapon will be steal. Not sure about the plume on his helmet yet.
Picture updated with some more progress
I posted the latest update picture of my Void Dragon to the 'Evier metal' and 'necrons' facebook groups. I have been absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the amount of positive feedback, It's more then I ever expected in a million years.
There are so many amazing painters over there! I admire their work every day and I aspire to paint at their level.
I am only a hobbyist and a learner, so when I get so much nice feedback it's blows my mind. I love painting this plastic and I am really genuinly grateful to everyone who follows me and comments on my posts. It means a lot to me. Thanks a lot 🙏
A work in progress of my Void Dragon. I am really proud of how it has turned out! I am working on the base (and the back is not done yet.... dont turn it around 😅)
I had decided that was not going to order a lethiathen box set. I was going to resist the marketing hype 😅 I don't 'NEED' any more models, I already have TONS to paint. I dont need a giant rule book when I have it on pdf. I even managed to not order a box on pre order day.
But I have given in and ordered the box set.. 😆 I found one copy at an independent store at a discount and could not resist. There are two reasons why I changed my mind.
I saw the models in person at a gw store, and the terminators and space marine characters look fantastic. The sculpts are amazing. Better in real life the in the pictures.
The second reason is cost. I think that it will be much cheaper (over all) to sell the models you don't want rather then to buy the few models you do want!
Massive progress update! I think I am FINALLY getting NMM now... Advice welcome!
Finally! I think I understand now what it's supposed to look like! I have been looking at real metal objects and I think it's finally clicked... after 50 coats of paint! 🤣 (the finish looks it 🙄) I am going to remove the paint.... again... this time I will get it right!
I think it has been so hard because my brain is trying to paint 'skin' in yellow colours.... i am aiming for metal but it just kept looking like yellow skin 🤷♂️
But i am finally getting somewhere. Metal shapes...not skin! 🤣🤣
Progress update. I might have made a mistake!... Maybe I should have tried to learn NMM on a stormcast or something! Something with easy shapes! 🤣 I must be insane!
These two legs have taken about 6 hours and they still don't look right. I am starting to see where I need to add more shadow and shine... but it's tough. I am learning and this is my first attempt.
Part of me thinks I should shade some more of the model, and when more of it is painted the whole effect will look more like metal. Or should I stick at these legs until I am satisfied... even if it takes another 8 hours 🤣
I am well out of my comfort zone. I will have to just keep going... if anyone has any advice it would be very welcome!
It's started. I have been looking at reference images..... and I will prob regret this really quickly 🤣
The king is finished 😁 I have learned A LOT from this project, and I am really proud of him! Next project is built and primed. Updates comming soon. I told myself I would take a break for a few days... but I just really feel like painting 🤣
The king is done! Finished! Calling him 99.9% done. That's as good as it gets... for now lol
I have learned LOADS from this massive project! I challenged myself, and I tried allot of new techniques. This took a long time but it was worth the effort. I enjoyed every minute of it. A real learning experience.
My plan now is to take a break for a few days. After that I need to pay my troop painting tax...
Final pictures of TSK comming soon
Progress on the weapons, hopefully one more session and they will be finished.
The king and his two mates are painted! Looking at pictures I am going add another colour to his friends. I think a turquoise into their chains maybe? And some more highlights. I think they look a bit plain. I am very happy with his cloak. Their weapons are a work in progress. As soon as their weapons are done he can have a better throne then my paint soap 😅
