We’re pleased to reveal the six artists being supported to work with Barnsley communities to create socially-engaged art through Project .
This is a unique chance for those chosen to explore and develop socially-engaged practice, which involves working closely with communities.
Artists will be teamed up with people in Barnsley’s Principal Towns of Cudworth, Hoyland, Pen*stone, Royston, Wombwell and Goldthorpe over the coming months to co-create new artwork.
The chosen artists are as follows:
Wombwell: Izzy Dabiri, textile artist.
Cudworth: Jayde Marie Bell mural painter.
Pen*stone: Lucy Burns illustrator and mural painter.
Goldthorpe: Tahir Shah - film producer, storyteller and director.
Royston: Jack Riley – theatre and community arts practitioner.
Hoyland: Thomas Palmer – sculptor and potter.
This project is funded by Cultural Development Fund Round 2 by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and Arts Council England.
It is part of the Storying Barnsley programme, which aims to boost Barnsley’s cultural and creative sectors through partnerships and connectivity and offer unique cultural experiences for people living and visiting the town. Barnsley Council and Beam Arts UK are pleased to announce an exciting artwork project to enhance and celebrate the landscape of Goldthorpe and the Dearne.
An open call has been launched for artists to create mural artwork for the Horse and Groom Square, as part of the Goldthorpe Town Deal.
The new artwork will celebrate the rich heritage and culture of the area and reflect both its past and future.
Through this open call Barnsley Council and Beam are seeking to commission an experienced mural artist (or artist collective/ collaboration) to develop vibrant and exciting artwork for two adjacent walls bordering the new public realm area of Horse and Groom Square, Goldthorpe.
Barnsley Council is investing £23.1 million from the UK Government’s Towns Fund in helping Goldthorpe to thrive and creating new cultural opportunities.
Key Details:
All inclusive budget: £20,000 plus VAT if applicable
Timeframe: December 2024 – May 2025
Deadline for Expressions of Interest: 9am, Monday 18th November 2024
The aims of the commission are to engage with local residents to inform the design and delivery of vibrant new paint to surface mural artwork for walls on two adjacent sides of the new Horse and Groom Square, Goldthorpe. The design will be contemporary and informed by place specific research and community engagement to ensure the work is meaningful for local residents.

Today marked the unveiling of Hope & Heritage by in . This public artwork, commissioned by and supported by , honours Featherstone’s rich mining past while looking ahead to its bright future.
It was wonderful to see such a good turn out to mark this occasion.
The artwork features two halves of a refurbished pit wheel combined with two newly fabricated halves. One wheel captures the memories and resilience of the community, while the other represents hope and optimism for Featherstone’s future.

We’re seeking an experienced public realm visual artist with a 2D / Surface Design practice to create a large scale, 2D artwork panel, to be sited on a freestanding frame at the entrance to the new Catterick Community and Enterprise Building. The artwork should be vibrant, welcoming and inclusive, positively enhancing the new facility and signposting people into the new space, offering a warm and energising welcome.
