Very wise words- we haven’t had the best summer. I don’t know about you but I haven’t had to water my lawn much 🤣

A few tips to help you care for your lawn over the summer.

Watering:
When the weather is very hot and dry your lawn will likely respond by turning a honey-gold colour. Don't worry, it will recover after a good rain shower, but if you prefer it green (and provided there are no hosepipe restrictions in place) watering your lawn will maintain that verdant look. It's better to water copiously 2-3 times a week than to give it a light sprinkling every day.

Mowing:
If your lawn keeps growing, you should keep mowing. Try to avoid mowing in the heat of the day, it could stress the plants and it definitely won't be good for your health. It's wise to raise the height of cut a little to help shade the soil and conserve water.

Iron:
Iron is a great mineral to apply to lawns in august. Not only does it boost greenness, it helps to control Red Thread disease and, if applied in the right formulation, will also stunt moss growth.

Keep Moving Lawn Furniture and Toys:
Avoid leaving anything on the lawn for more than 24 hours at a time. It will create ugly yellow marks.

Shade Busting:
For lawns that struggle with shade, now is a good time to trim hedges that block the sun and reduce air flow to the lawn.

Going On Holiday?
Mow the lawn and give it a good soaking before you go and it won't be too difficult to resume your normal lawn care regime when you return.

Plan Autumn Renovations:
Lawn care specialists get busy in autumn so if your lawn needs scarifying and aerating, now is a good time book a slot with your local UKLCA member.

Ragged edges to the tips of your grass plants is a sure sign that your mower blades are blunt. Instead of slicing cleanly through the vegetation, your mower is ripping at the leaves and causing unsightly damage. Those ragged edges not only look ugly, they take a long time to heal and could potentially encourage disease.

Sharpening or replacing your lawn mower blade will solve the problem in an instant. If you don’t know how to do it yourself, most garden centres will be able to recommend a lawn mower repair shop.

You might be interested to know you can’t replicate high grade FERTILISER with shop bought. Most shop bought is 2% 4%nitrogen.

The high grade stuff is 20% and above filled with other amazing stuff and drought protected. It’s slow release and it’s VERY expensive to buy even at cost. Our latest fertiliser has black onyx in it as well. The science is very interesting.

You also don’t need MOSS KILLER in every treatment - which is the problem with a 4 in 1 product. Moss killers are far more effective when applied on their own at the right time of year.

As for W**D KILLING you don’t always need w**d killer to be applied and a “spot spray method” is far better for the environment. Plus the w**d killer we use is far more effective as it’s better quality and we use other additives to prevent drift and activate the ingredients in the selective w**d killer more efficiently.

Our hallow tine AERATION machine you can’t even buy in this country you have to ship it from America and it’s a brilliant bit of kit. Again something to keep in mind.

Ultimately it’s down to the individual and what your willing to pay. We have a young family and have to keep our own costs down ourselves so I totally understand doing somethings yourself. But you do also get what you pay for - if you find the right company.

Here are a few lawn care tips for the month of June.

✅ Now is a good time to repair any worn or damaged areas with good quality grass seed. Don't forget to use a seedmix that matches the rest of your lawn and suits the conditions in your garden. Keep seeds well watered until they are well established.

✅ Keep up with your mowing routine. Mowing little and often helps encourage a lovely thick sward.

✅ We're all using our lawns more now that the weather is warmer, but leaving toys, paddling pools, blankets or furniture in the same spot for too long can stress your grass. Keep moving things around to avoid ugly yellow patches in the lawn.

✅ All of the rain we've been having of late may well have washed some of the plant nutrients from your soil. Applying a suitable lawn feed will support strong healthy growth and help your lawn recover faster from wear and tear.

✅ Ask your lawn care professional for advice on seasonal lawn treatments to help prepare your lawn for the hot dry summer ahead. NB Lawn treatments are not the same as lawn feeds, they work alongside fertilisers to really boost plant and soil health.

✅ Keep an eye out for lawn pests and diseases and consult a UKLCA professional for help to control any outbreaks.
