After William Sloane died and his wife moved to Daresbury, the house was occupied by another family linked to the manufacture of white lead.

Cyril Hill, his wife Winifred and son Rupert lived there from 1923. Winifred was William's Sloane's youngest daughter and she married Cyril in 1914. Cyril was an engineer in mining and metallurgy, a director of paint companies and manufacture of lead and its products.

The working conditions in the production of white lead were awful. The lead was highly toxic and indeed, had been know to be so for a long time, yet it wasn't banned until 1992.

This newspaper article about an inquest gives you an idea of just what it was like.
