Not long back from a great few days in cornwall with my lovely wife and our two labradors. We stayed on a quiet little farm that just happened to have a carp pond a short stroll away, which was perfect for walking down to with the dogs and either a mug of coffee in the morning or a beer/wine in the evening (and a fly rod of course..).. I was delighted on our first evening when Deb took the rod and proceeded to catch more (and bigger!) fish than me! This wasn't a one off as she did it again a couple of days later catching the largest carp we'd seen all week! I did try for Sea trout another evening, hooking a fish that wiped the floor with me, tearing out of the pool, jumping as it went and throwing the hook on its last crashing leap. We also explored some quiet beaches/coves with a rod in the rucksack "just in case". As much as I love fishing in overseas locations you can have just as much fun much closer to home. A fantastic week with my three favorite girls. We'll be back.

Back from a trip down south with Brian this weekend to fish for sea trout after dark. This was the first time we've really done this properly. We walked the banks in daylight scouting out where we going to fish later, had some practice casts (away from the pools we were fishing so as not to disturb them) then sat on the bank with a large mug of tea waiting for the light to fade before we started. As we didn't know the river very well, we took it in turns to fish the pools. Around 11pm on our second pool, on Brian's 3rd cast he had a big pull out in the darkness and a strong fish leapt and charged around the pool before I managed to land a stunningly beautiful sea trout. After a coupe of quick photographs, the fish was released unharmed and swam away strongly. It was quite surreal fishing in the dark with the stars above, the moon shining brightly, a low mist over the water and the sound of the wildlife, but something I will definitely be doing again.

After several months of studying for an exam for my "day job" I had the absolute pleasure of a day on the river with my good friend and GAIA (Game Angling Instructors Association) mentor Mr John Reynolds. After such a lay off (I hadn't fished a river since 14th March) I was a little rusty but still met some beautiful fish including this gorgeous grayling and several wild brown trout on a 3wt rod/line with one of my variations of a pheasant tail nymph fished under a small dry fly. A great day that I hope to repeat soon. Many Thanks John.

Do any fly anglers on here drive a pickup truck? I’ve recently bought one and I’m interested to see how other anglers/guides organise the back/load bed to carry fishing kit (if at all). Thanks in advance.

Nice to receive some fishing goodies in the post today. I have some zap-a-gap glue which is great for any fishing or fly tying purpose as it’s waterproof and I’m really looking forward to trying the new Rio skagit trout Spey shooting head on my 5wt & 6wt single handed rods. I think it will be great for casting in tight spots with limited backcast room using a single handed Spey cast and the line has enough mass to work with a variety of floating or sinking tips and large flies. I’ll keep you posted on how testing goes and what works well. If anyone would like casting tuition (including single handed Spey casting or just a ‘brush up’) i’m happy to arrange this for when the current restrictions are lifted. Stay safe everyone. Tight lines

Last grayling trip of the season today. Challenging conditions in bright sunshine with a lot of extra water and flow but some beautiful fish graced the net today. A lovely way to finish the season

Local river out of sorts due to recent rain but a good opportunity for me to have a practice double hand casting (Snap T, Circle Spey and Single Spey) with my Switch rod. Morale of the story.. Don't let poor weather/river conditions stop you getting out there and having a rod in your hand. You can find alternative venues (there's pike in most canals and lakes) or use the opportunity to keep your skills sharp. Tight lines everyone

Not easiest day hunting pike on the river today but John and I both landed one each on roach/baitfish patterns.

My last fish of 2019, a feisty pike caught on a self-tied bucktail/sparkle "hollow fly". Happy new year to all my family, friends and fellow fishers.

Last grayling trip of 2019 for me yesterday but what a day in the sunshine, wading the river for these beautiful fish.

With the river clearing/levels dropping now is a prime time for predator fishing on the rivers. I had three lovely pike this morning in around an hour whilst walking the dogs along my local river.

Photos from Neil Taylor Fly Fishing's post 28/12/2019

With my local river still too high and coloured to be a good choice for pike on the fly, I thought I'd make a 4 hour round trip down south to my "local" grayling water (80 miles each way!), only to find it also carrying a lot of extra water and a lot of extra colour. Not best pleased I made a coffee and thought to myself "well, you're here now, give it a go, there's worse things to be doing than wading a river for grayling" so off I went. I covered a lot of water, having one take which was this lovely grayling which put a serious bend in my 3wt rod!

13/12/2019

It's prime time now for BIG pike on the rivers - as long as they are not too coloured/flooded - as the baifish shoal up in the colder weather and the predators follow them.

On my local rivers I use a #9 or a #10 rod, most often with a clear intermediate line, a short 20lb flurocarbon leader to a 49 strand knottable wire trace and a roach or a perch imitation. Travel light, cover plenty of water and at some point you'll find your pike. One last thing - Don't "trout strike" (lift the rod) when you get a take, you won't set the hook, instead use a strip strike with a firm pull with your line hand with your rod pointing towards your fly. The weather may be cold and the daylight hours short but there are still fish to be caught. Some chunky chalkstream grayling from a cold day on the river with Brian today

Beautiful time of the year to be fishing the river for "the lady of the stream" - the grayling. Guided sessions and flies are available. Tight lines

Just back from an amazing trip to British Columbia in North West Canada. We were superbly looked after by the guys & girls at Skeena Spey lodge. I'd wanted to visit BC and fish for steelhead for may years having read many articles and watched several films. To fish there was like standing in a movie set! As i'm fairly new to Double handed/spey fishing my expectations were quite low and I'd gone with the view of seeing a new place and casting a fly for steelhead, hooking (or even landing one) would be a huge bonus/the icing on the cake. Amazingly the stars aligned and a beautiful, wild, hen steelhead took my fly on a day where we had Mikey and his beautiful wolf dog, Ashley, with us and Deb (my wife) had her first fishing trip complete and a very welcome fire on the bak to keep warm. I cannot recommend the area or Skeena Spey highly enough. It wasn't all fishing as we hired a truck and went exploring too seeing some amazing scenery including the Kispiox totem poles and fabled kispiox river. We will be back!

Simple, drab nymphs work well in clear summer rivers. This is my stripped quill Jig nymph on a size 16 jig hook with a 2mm bead, coq de leon tail, stripped quill body (varnished) and a twist of squirrel fur dubbing. Simple, sinks fast, quick to tie and catches fish

03/08/2019

Low,clear water equals tricky fishing but with careful wading and some small natural flies good fish can still be caught. This beautiful grayling was caught this afternoon from a very clear chalkstream on a stripped quill nymph on a long, delicate french leader

This lovely carp put a serious bend in my 6wt saltwater fly rod this afternoon.

A lovely day on the river catching wild browns on an ancient Hardy cane rod and classic reel. Some to a parachute olive but most to a good old fashioned Pheasant Tail nymph.

Photos from Neil Taylor Fly Fishing's post 22/05/2019

This time of year you really don't need long to get some time by the water. These two fish were caught today after work (my "day job" not guiding/fly casting instructiion) in just over an hour. Guided carp sessions Including loan of all gear and flies is available all summer. Message me for details. Tight lines

Awesome day today at the Sage/Rio day for guides and instructors at Manningford Trout fishery where Guide Fly Fishing arranged for product designers to give a presentation on their rods, reels and lines. After lunch we got to try a variety of single and double handed rods on the lake. I can honestly say I enjoyed casting every single one of them. If you are in the market for a very high quality new rod, reel or line, Sage Sage Fly Fishing and Rio RIO PRODUCTS products are well worth checking out. If you’re after a Great Lake to fish for trout then Manningford Trout fishery Manningford Trout Fishery run by Malcolm Hunt in Wiltshire is first class and a venue I regularly take clients to catch their first trout.
