We have a passion for Fine English Antique Furniture dating from the reigns of Charles II through to George IV. The Harvey's family business was founded in 1951 in Chalk Farm, London and expanded into showrooms in Mayfair at 5, Old Bond Street before opening premises at 86 Corn Street in Witney in 1996. The emphasis has always been on quality and integrity whilst conservation is undertaken in thei

This regency portable writing slope is slightly larger than usual dimensions, adding size to its sense of grandeur, already visible from the exterior of Satinwood and Rosewood. The interior has a gilt-tooled leather writing surface and spaces for ink bottles, stationery and quills.

Could not resist this patience table when I saw the top opened! Cups and casters stamped Cope's Patent and attributable to Gillows.

Dating from about 1750, this elegant single drop leaf side table with pad feet in mahogany has a beautiful grain and tonality. The drop leaf is supported by swing-out legs on a double gate action, and when open the rectangular top reveals a large well. This type of table recalls a typically Scottish “bedroom table” model, as seen in the bills from Alexander Peter of Edinburgh to Lord Dumfries of Dumfries House.

This delicate and sophisticated étagère in Satinwood has six rectangular tiers ready to display your treasures and is dated circa 1790. The colour and grain are particularly refined and luminous.

Some designs just work magnificently in all settings, and in the Regency Period, Gillows of Lancaster was one of the great British firms that designed furniture which could truly be defined as “timeless”. We’re happy to have a pair of Gillows Rosewood chairs on show at Harvey’s, both stamped by the makers on the top edges of the front seat rails. The quality of construction is superb, designed with a dished top rail that is as stylish now as it was in 1815.

This table was made for explorers, for a family of seafarers. They called it “The Chart Table”, and it’s easy to see why – a wide sea chart or nautical map would sit comfortably on the table’s raised gilt-tooled, leather-lined easel top. Prepared for everything, the folio table was constructed with large inset castors, so it can glide into prime position in any room... or ship!

The subtle figuring and fine texture of golden-toned burr yew wood cross banding contrasts marvellously with the strong, almost geometric chevron figuring of mahogany in this very fine George III Period bureau. The interior construction mimics the exterior, as the fall of the bureau opens to reveal a central door flanked by small drawers, pigeon holes and secret compartments.

In the mid-1700s, important items in the household came in many sizes, from grand, polished bookcases used to hold a plethora of treasures down to a tiny handmade key that could reveal the wealth inside a gorgeous tea caddy such as this one. Made around 1760, this exceptional Chippendale Period Mahogany tea caddy has three lidded compartments intended for black tea, green tea and a blend of the black and green teas. Its rococo brassware is original, and the handle is the same as that used by Thomas Chippendale in 1759 on the Breakfront Bookcase made for the Yellow Bedroom at Dumfries House.

Many years ago I was asked to supply antique furniture pieces which could have been on board Captain Cook's epic voyage. This was to be aboard the HMB Endeavour Replica which was built to celebrate the bi-centenary of his voyage. It was an exciting project and I was reminded of this in a chance conversation earlier today with a Rear Admiral so I decided to share an image of the centenary bark.
Is there any instrument more elegant than a Regency book press? This fine example is in pristine condition, made in Mahogany and still retains the original two oak boards used for pressing books. We often think, what stories could our antiques tell us? But in this case, we also wonder – what stories did this book press once contain?
