I came across this post today from an old school friend Liv, and asked her for permission to share her thoughts on my page.........she kindly said yes....I find her words inspiring (she always was an amazing writer) but it shows yet again the transformation that can be achieved by creating the time each day to invest in yourself, moving in the way that works for you, and just being consistent with it...........
"I have some bad news folks, turns out exercise really is a magic bullet.
I am on my second week 4 of Couch to 5k. It’s been a bit of a leap so I will repeat it until it’s not such a big deal.
So I’ve been doing these ‘runs’ 3 times a week for 9 weeks now, progress not really as important as developing this habit without any emotion attached that might trigger self-sabotage. I also want to start strength training at a gym later in the year without being stressed out at the thought of a warmup/cooldown treadmill run (although I will miss the outdoors when I start).
I don’t like to call them runs because at most I am jogging slowly for a few minutes but it is 30mins of outdoor aerobic exercise which is more than I was doing (ie none). Having felt like I’ve aged a huge amount over the last 5 years, I can literally feel my body getting younger. I have the energy back that I must have had back when I was wrangling 3 small autists. I’m actually finding it hard to concentrate on negative things for very long, despite some emotional drama happening elsewhere in the background, the old rose tinted anti-catstrophizing goggles are firmly welded on.
I also started yoga again once a week around the same time and my yoga teacher says she can see my focus, accuracy and posture improving every week.
Really enjoying being outdoors so much too (esp since starting the Walk 100 Miles in May challenge this week) and obviously I am incredibly chuffed with myself so there are some emotions attached after all. I never expected it to push so many good buttons."

I recently did a presentation on values. What are values - our own set of beliefs about what we see as important. It got me thinking about my values for movement and exercise. There were some common themes in the kind of movement/exercise I enjoy and those I'm not motivated to do at all. I discovered my values were around variety, focus, connection, freedom and learning.
Now I know why I'm not motivated to do a spinning class or virtual classes! Do you know your movement and exercise values?
ASICs have commissioned a report, the largest global study of its kind, on the gender exercise gap where 24, 959 people around the world shared their views.
Key findings:
* women's physical activity levels are positively linked to their state of mind. The more they move, the better they feel.
* around the world over half of women don't exercise as much as they would like to.
*51% reported stopping or decreasing exercise as they got older
* the most reported barriers were lack of time, other commitments, cost of trainers.
*2/3 of mothers sited motherhood as the reason they dropped out of regular exercise.
The report shows common barriers faced by women across the globe.
Understanding the barriers that stop you from moving more is useful to know as a starting point to finding a solution.

Sharing this research by BMJ on the effect of exercise on depression - concluding that walking, yoga and strength training are more effective than other exercises, particularly when intense.

So today, I tried Zumba - thanks to my sister-in-law Lauren for suggesting it and going with me....
If I'm honest, I did not have a clue what was going on BUT.....
there was music, it got me moving, my heart rate went up (next time I'll remember to track it), and ultimately I felt so my better for it....
What I noticed was, the class was full, there were women of all ages there, no-one cared how you danced. As soon as I stopped trying to do the moves right - I started to enjoy myself, which is pretty much what the instructor had recommended at the start of the class.
What is Zumba - a fitness programme that combines Latin inspired dance moves and cardio.
