Several terms are used to describe predatory journals.

‘Predatory’ highlights their aggressive business practices, and has stuck. But it doesn't always distinguish their behaviour from other commercial publishers.

Sometimes they are referred to as 'fake', but might be misleading as these journals do host articles and doesn't get to the root of the problem.

Both 'deceptive' and 'shell' more accurately reflect their unethical behaviours and lack of support and infrastructure.

Whether you are literature searching or trying to publish your article, learn more about how you can avoid the pitfalls of predatory journals by following the link to our Predatory Journals Hub.

Recent E. coli cases linked to McDonald's underscore the complexity of produce contamination. Unlike beef, where rigorous testing and regulations have minimized bacterial outbreaks, vegetables are harder to control due to environmental exposure. Produce can be tainted by wildlife waste, runoff, or untreated water, all of which are challenging to detect even with standard food safety tests. Pathogens in onions, lettuce, and other raw vegetables persist as major risks in food safety, with industry experts advocating for advanced, possibly harmonized testing standards across suppliers.

A false hit occurs when a search term has different meanings in different contexts, and can be incredibly frustrating when literature searching.

But because FSTA doesn't include any results unrelated to food, this problem is minimised. Searching for spirits in FSTA returns results about alcoholic beverages, and not about moods, fuel, or the supernatural.
