Having already carried out a timing belt and water pump replacement, replaced the front brakes and a few other jobs on this car, the customer knew who to call when the power steering failed on her Peugeot 207. With over 10 years in the trade working on all brands including time served in a Peugeot dealer, this is an issue I’ve seen a few times with an internal failure of the power steering motor. The customer opted for a used unit to keep costs down, and now it’s all fitted and she’s back on the road!

I also carried out a full service on her partner’s vehicle whilst I was there giving him peace of mind on the road and keeping his car in good order!

BMW F10 5-series - 2009-2017

This M5 came to me with multiple issues, the screenwash not working, the sunroof sticking and the rear footwell full of water.

The screenwash bottles in this fill with black mould over time which blocks up the gauze filter on the pump and stops your screenwash from working. Pump removed, bottle flushed out and gauze cleaned, all sorted!

The sunroof simply needed lubricating, something which should be done when the vehicle is serviced in order to prevent expensive repairs further down the line.

The water ingress - most cars we see are available in right and left hand drive. BMW only make one shell for the F10, and then fit the various left/right hand drive parts to that. Where the steering column would go through the body on a left hand drive car, it leaves a hole, to which BMW fit the pictured blanking plug. Over time these perish and allow water into the car, which runs underneath the front carpet and wets the carpet in the passenger rear footwell. B**g replaced, car dried out, all sorted!

Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall 1.0 & 1.2 petrol engines:

I’m seeing this failure more and more lately as these cars age. Incorrect oil when serviced or lack of servicing causes the timing belt to degrade prematurely. Parts of the timing belt then go through the oil channels and blocks the oil pickup strainer, starving the engine and turbo of oil, and that’s if the timing belt doesn’t break and kill the engine!

There is a special tool used to measure the timing belt during servicing which can easily tell you it needs changing - shown here - before and after picture so you can see the difference in width of the belt!

This failure is usually found either when measuring the belt during servicing or when an engine management light pops up on the dashboard.

Corsa D/E ABS issue: the ABS pumps on these vehicles fail, causing one wheel to brake less than the others, often noticed when the pedal is harder than usual or you go for an MOT and it fails on braking imbalance.

2016 Vauxhall Vivaro - pinning sound when turning the wheel. The strut top bearing had failed, causing the spring to make a pinging sound when turning the wheel.
