Headaches, migraine, back, neck or joint pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fibromyalgia – they’re just some of the common causes of chronic pain, which is estimated to affect between a third to half of all UK adults.
If you or someone close to you is one of them, you don’t need me to tell you it can be physically and emotionally draining. You probably feel like you’ve tried everything. This podcast by Dr Rangan Chatterjee delves into chronic pain and how reframing your mindset when experiencing chronic pain may be life changing for you. The approach spoken of during this podcast falls in line with The Bluebell Clinic’s philosophies to chronic pain and is too good not to share.

It baffles me why people litter at all never mind in such a beautiful place. I’ve litter picked for a few years now, not for acclamation, but because I hate seeing litter and because picking it up makes me feel great. At this time of year when the foliage starts to die down it’s easy to see anything that’s been thrown off the beaten path, so easy to take advantage of. If this post can inspire just one person to litter pick then happy days!

FULL TEXT: "Back pain could be eased by osteopathy, research in the British Medical Journal has suggested.
The study of more than 3,700 people found “promising evidence” that the manipulation of the body’s tissues and bones could relieve pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions.
The research, published in BMJ Open, comes after years of debate about osteopathy, with mixed evidence about its merits.
Back pain is one of the most common disabling conditions in the Western world, with around eight million regular sufferers.
Eight in 10 adults will suffer back, neck or muscle pain at some point, costing the UK more than £14 billion a year in days of work lost.
Experts warn that the situation has been worsened by increased use of smartphones and laptops, a trend exacerbated by the rise of home working.
Osteopathy, first developed in the late 1800s in the USA, is based on the principle that the anatomy and physiology of a person’s body are intertwined, with the goal of repairing imbalances in the relationship.
It has grown in popularity over the past decade and is now regularly prescribed on the NHS for back pain. There are more than 5,000 osteopaths in Great Britain, who provide an estimated eight million consultations a year for musculoskeletal problems in the UK.
Osteopathy more effective than other therapies
Research by Turin’s School of Osteopathy, examining nine systematic reviews of the evidence, found it to be more effective than other methods.
The search involved analyses conducted between 2013 and 2020, involving 55 primary trials and 3,740 participants.
The reviews reported on the use of osteopathy in a wide range of conditions, including acute and chronic non-specific low back pain, chronic non-specific neck pain, chronic non-cancer pain, primary headache and irritable bowel syndrome.
The analyses found that osteopathy is more effective than other approaches in reducing pain and improving physical function in lower back and neck pain.
It was also found to help back pain in pregnant women and those who have just had a baby, as well as in chronic pain not associated with cancer.
Osteopathy was compared against placebos, physiotherapy, no treatment, other forms of complementary medicine and against standard care, which can involve short periods of rest, followed by exercise, as well as painkillers, heat or ice.
The researchers said the overview suggested that osteopathy “could be effective in the management of musculoskeletal disorders”, particularly for pregnant women or those who have just given birth.
Only trials carried out by doctors with osteopathic training or osteopaths were included."

Low back pain can be felt anywhere below the ribs and above the legs. The lower back bears most of the body’s weight as it is the connection between the upper and lower body. Because of this, it is easily injured when you lift, reach, or twist.
Low back pain is one of the most common medical complaints in the UK. In fact, a significant proportion of the population will be affected by it in their lifetime.
Low back pain is often caused by overuse, strain, poor posture, slouching or injury. For example, people can often hurt their lower backs by lifting something too heavy, working in the garden, prolonged periods of sitting, driving or playing sports.
Ageing can also lead to low back pain. Bones and muscles tend to lose strength as we age; which increases the risk of injury and degeneration. The spongy discs between the bones of the spine (vertebrae) may suffer from wear and tear and no longer provide enough cushion between the bones. A disk that bulges or breaks open (herniated disc) can press on nerves, causing back pain.
Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain, stiffness and inflammation in the joints of the body. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis often referred to as wear and tear or degeneration, that is most common in the over 50s.
Here are some ways that we can help with arthritis.
• Gentle mobilisation of joints, within the pain-free area to increase range of movement.
• Mobilisation of nearby joints to take the stress off of the problem joints.
• Reduce the tension in muscles and soft tissues which have become tight causing pain and discomfort.
• In most cases extra weight has increased stress on the joints, and painful joints may make exercise difficult and hard to lose weight. We offer practical advice on weight loss strategies and suitable exercises for patients.
• Certain foods can increase inflammation with inside the body therefore removing these can reduce pain.
• Since osteoarthritis is irreversible you will always leave with a coping strategy of how best to stay pain-free in the future.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine stainless steel needles into the skin. It has been used in China for over 2,000 years and increasingly in Western medicine since the 1970s. Acupuncture may be used to treat a wide range of common health problems and to reduce pain. Acupuncture is a great modality to reduce muscle tension, if patients are sensitive to the pressure of massage. Acupuncture can also be utilised to reach deep restrictions we may struggle to reach without the use of needles. Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce endorphins and oxytocin, its own pain and stress-relieving chemicals. It promotes sleep by stimulating the release of melatonin in the body and encourages a sense of well-being by stimulating the release of serotonin. Acupuncture also stimulates nerve fibres to block out pain signals and helps to reduce the sensitivity of tender points in the body.
