Scout Radio
Scout radio now broadcasting
Scout Radio is the National Active Support Unit providing a broadcast radio station to scouting and guiding events across the UK.
Highlight from the Autumn term in 2017 included:
Our Pinewood Derby, orienteering at the Knavesmire, Cub quiz competition, toasting marshmallows, visiting the observatory at Bootham school, trip to a fire station, Escape challenge, celebrating St Andrews Day, taking part in our version of the Highland Games, building Guys, Beavers making music and singing with the choir, archery competition, a huge turnout for our November newspaper collection. And one of our Cubs won the County photography competition.
We're proud our members get to experience so many different things with their friends.
In Spring 2017 there was the first ever Flag Day parade in Copmanthorpe for Scouting and Guiding.
In 2017 our group continued to grow with a new Beaver Colony and new Cub Pack opening at Easter. Both were full on opening and had waiting lists. A new Scout Troop was also opened meaning that there were then over 150 young people in Scouting at Copmanthorpe.
What couldn't you survive without on a camping trip?
Our Explorers have enjoyed some Survivals camps — back to basics, including one at Snowball in March 2017.
Making their own shelter from a tarpaulin and what they could forage from the woods around them, they slept under the stars. One Explorer even had a go at weaving his own hammock out of string!
Taking the bare minimum with them on camp in terms of food, they managed to come up with a gourmet meal of roast chicken, home-made bread and of course the camp staple of baked beans.
Again, another example of lots of skills being learnt, memories made and friendships forged.
CAMPS! We know our members love the opportunity to go on these trips but we'd really like to hear your favourite memories. Comment below.
Here's a Beaver Camp Report by Emily.
"At camp we had lots and lots of fun and food (cake). We did an Easter egg hunt in our lodges. There was four colours, orange, yellow, green and blue. My lodge was colour green and we were the last ones to finish. The eggs were hidden all around snowball. They were very hard to find. Every Beaver was sent to come with some cake. We brought some choco spread pastry puffs. Because there was about twenty two cakes there was definitely too much of it! When we pitched our tents we had to unpeg them and move them all up so there was enough space to fit them all in. But then finally we managed to pop our things in and squeeze in together. I really enjoyed everything including the camp fire songs. I had a fab time and can't wait for the next one".
Every year, we apply to Aviva for a little extra support...this year, they are going bigger and better than ever, through a crowdfunding project!
Essentially, this means that anyone can donate to our cause through the crowdfunding link below.
Please share this post amongst family and friends, and let's get the final £5000 that we need to get our new minibus!
Plus, if you or any of your family and friends work for Aviva, then please ask them to use their virtual donations wisely when their opportunity to vote comes along...we need every penny!
Thank you :)

"We loved taking part in the Cubs cookery competition!"
Here we share a report from one of our younger members, after his team enjoyed a challenge back in 2017.
“When Mummy asked me if I wanted to be part of the cooking competition I was excited. On week one I was late as I was at swimming lessons but the team waited for me to do the important things. Paul started to teach us how to cook and handle the fire safely. He told each of us which part we would be cooking, I was partnered with Z and we were cooking the sausages and beans. Every week we practised our part of the meal and each week T made his hot chocolate and swiss roll which we were allowed to eat and drink. The day before the competition I practised at home on a gas camping stove. I prepared and cooked sausages and beans for me and my dad and we ate them in the garden. On the day of the competition I went on the minibus with the others and we played Ispy, we were excited. When we got to Snowball we set up our campfire area ready to start. Paul left and we started to cook. At the end of cooking we were tidying and it was funny because the water bag split. We were surprised when we got 2nd place in the competition but were really happy. I think Paul is a brilliant example to us and I hope to be doing other activities with him in the future”.
Our members get lots of opportunities to develop their cooking skills. At the start of 2017 our Explorers had a Master Chef challenge and pitted their culinary skills against each other. They conjured up a two course meal that they had to cook on one stove. The results were pretty impressive dishes such as full English breakfast, Katsu curry and lemon meringue pie, to name but a few.
What's the best thing you remember being learnt at one of our cooking sessions?
We had a special guest as our judge - our very own Paul T (Cub leader), chef extraordinaire - came to sample the food on his expert palate!
In March 2017 our County Commissioner awarded her personal Commendation to Nigel White, Copmanthorpe Cub Scout Leader, for his excellent work in support of Cubs100 in 2016.
Nigel was recognised for his efforts in helping with the planning, organisation and ex*****on of numerous events across the District in celebration of the Cubs Centenary.

Winter Camp for Scouts and Explorers at Hawkhirst back in January 2017. Such concentration preparing the fish! Great cookery skills these young people will be able to use in future.
Which meetings, trips, or activities do these 2017 quotes belong to?
“I don't think Bob Holness ever had contestants dabbing in his day!”
“Matthew is tackling the unpicking.....So far so good, only stabbed himself twice so far....Make that 3 times”
“But which team ate the most hot dogs?”
Beetroot joke
“He was upset about leaving Beavers- 'but mum, scouts are good, cubs are cool.... but everyone knows that Beavers rule!!'”
At the end of 2016:
• New Explorer Unit flag and Union flag dedicated at Remembrance Service. Large turnout of uniformed organisations with Service on Battle of the Somme theme.
• Chief Scout Award ceremony. Our Beavers got award for most Bronze awards in the year!
• Cubs Centenary Birthday Party with 450 other Cub Scouts around York at York University. There was an indoor camp fire, singing and Promises were renewed.
Do you remember these events?
Who remembers the joint event we had with Selby Cub Scouts at the end of 2016? We took part in JOTA (Jamboree on the Air) and made contact with Cubs and Scouts around the world on amateur radio and internet (via Skype).
It made the local news- our Copmanthorpe Scouts newsletter!.
We're looking back at some of our group's activities and achievements over the last couple of years. Comment with your memories under our posts and get in touch to add your own. How has been involved in Scouting made a difference in your young person's life?
