If you've visited York Maze, you've probably noticed the memorial on the exit of The Ivy Store!
In the early hours of 4th March 1945, a German Junkers JU88 night-fighter was attacking allied bombers returning to their base at Elvington airfield when it crashed into Dunnington Lodge farmhouse killing the crew and three of the family asleep in their beds.
It was the last German aircraft to crash on British soil and in 1993 a memorial was unveiled as a symbol of friendship and reconciliation between aircrews on both sides of the conflict.
The Memorial & Plaques were produced by the Doncaster Air Gunners Association and unveiled by 158 Squadron veteran Air Gunner Arthur Tate whose Halifax bomber was attacked by the JU88 and Herbert Thomas of the German Nightfighter Pilots Association.
The Flight of Friendship Reconciliation group became requested custodians of the memorial and began helping the aged veterans on their exchange friendship visits. In 2016 they were presented with the Coventry Cathedral Cross of nails in recognition of their continued work in friendship and reconciliation.
Farmer Tom acquired Dunnington Lodge farm in 2008, as the new home for York Maze. The memorial has been moved from the roadside, to a more fitting location near the exit to York Maze where it will be seen by thousands of visitors each summer.
On Saturday 7th September, York Maze welcomed The Flightpath Of Friendship Reconciliation group for a rededication ceremony attended by dignitaries, veterans senior Airforce staff and representatives from the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.

Preparations are in place and the site is starting to transform from what was a haven of corn, to a land of the living dead! 🙌

The York Maze is an award winning attraction based around a giant maze, made from over 1 million maize plants!!! With a Cafe, BBQ, Gift Shop and so much more to see and do. But that's not all, we also open at Halloween. So prepare for spooky fun for all, giant pumpkin competitions, Halloween events for families in the daytime, and Hallowscream for teenagers and adults at night during the Halloween half term.
When we are not open to the public, we host weddings in our beautiful barn complex. It's the perfect setting for a stunning rustic wedding!
