Our Story
Barnitts is one of York's largest independent department stores.
If you are looking for something new in your home we have over 45,000 square feet of retail space dedicated to the home and garden. Barnitts started trading more than 120 years ago. We are still in the very same building we started off in and have steadily expanded into more and more of the neighbouring buildings throughout the years. We enjoy a superb location right in the very heart of York city centre.
This family owned store has built a solid reputation in the city and beyond for excellent customer service teamed with an enviable stock list. One of the local sayings is "if Barnitts haven't got it, you can't get it anywhere!" the shopping experience is even more enjoyable because of the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
We have departments that can offer wide ranges from lighting, kitchen & housewares, garden products, hardware DIY, tools, workwear, gardening, fabrics & wall coverings and bathroom accessories. We have a comprehensive furniture department with stock sourced from all over Europe bringing your home to life in various woods, glass, chrome, and leather designs.
