I don’t normally put up personal posts on here, but I figured that if I didn’t do it now then I never would do.
Within the last six weeks, despite feeling as well and as fit as I could dare to feel at my time of life, I was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in my bowel. I had a procedure last week to take away the tumour together with a large part of my bowel. Up to press the operation went well and I am now at home embarking on the long, slow and challenging task of getting back to some kind of normal. I was looked after by some wonderful angel nurses in Ward 10 at Castle Hill Hospital near Hull. Without exception all the nursing, auxiliary and other supporting staff have been brilliant. Thank you. The operation perfectly carried out by Consultant Miss Helen O’Grady could make the difference between a normal life or an early death. Thank you doesn’t seem sufficient, but thank you anyway (I did have to complain about them ruining my six-pack though, but hey ho). We will only know when further tests are carried out over the next few weeks what my prognosis is. Best case scenario is that there is no spread and no further treatment required. There’s little point in thinking beyond that possibility at this stage.
Having married young I have a tremendous support network of descendants and that is a big part of why I want to put up this post. My recuperation will be in the comfortable house we have with my wonderful wife, Lesley, in very close attendance. Although our family are not that close geographically, we are very close emotionally and our well-being and my current recovery is their top priority and they will offer whatever is needed, whenever it is needed.
Many people in similar circumstances do not have that luxury - they may be single, widowed, live far from relatives, live in a small flat etc - and I dread to think how impossibly challenging my recuperation would be in similar circumstances. If you know of someone in that situation it wouldn’t do any harm to just ask if there is anything that you can do to help.
