Did you know? Clifford’s Tower has seen quite the transformation over the centuries!

In the 18th century, it was treated like a garden folly and may have even housed cattle - quite the fancy barn, right? 🐄

Meanwhile, the castle's former bailey became a prison! By the 1820s, the prison took over the entire castle area, hiding the iconic mound and tower from view.

We love watching the sun set on our tower 😍

This may look like a fun place to enjoy the view but did you know... this area used to be a toilet?!

Thought to be one of the world's first flushable toilets, why not come along and sit on this historical bog (please don't use this as a toilet though... sitting only please 🙏)?

We are very sorry but we will have to close Clifford’s Tower an hour early today (Friday 11th October) due to operational reasons 😔

Last entry will be at 4.30pm and we will close at 5pm.

If you pre-booked and not visited by then and your ticket has not been scanned, you will be automatically refunded within 10 working days so there is no need to contact us.

UPDATE: We are back open! The wind has calmed down 😁

Clifford's Tower will be closed today until at least 11:30am due to high winds above our safe operating level caused by Strom Lillian. We are monitoring the wind speeds and if we are able to re-open your ticket will still be valid.

If you have pre-booked a and we are unable to reopen today, you will be automatically refunded within 10 working days so there is no need to contact us. We are very sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Meanwhile, the former bailey of the castle underwent a major transformation into a prison complex. By the 1820s and 1830s, new courthouses and gaol buildings had sprung up, taking over the entire castle area.
