We are so excited to share this project with our development partners North Star York.

Proposals for the site of the former Mecca Bingo hall in Fishergate, York, will see an exciting new community for 280 students.

Built for Olympian Homes, Rialto House will provide quality accommodation with landscaping and bicycle parking. The name hails from the impressive art-deco cinema and live music venue that once stood there and hosted big names such as the Beatles and Mick Jagger.

There is a huge shortage of quality student accommodation in York, and we are so glad to be able to start making moves on sorting that out.

🌍 Combatting climate change

We aren’t the only ones wanting to fight the current climate crisis- Sheffield City Council has officially declared a climate emergency. In response they have set a target for the city to be zero carbon by 2030.

Our new city centre development, C-N Tower, is carbon neutral and will simultaneously provide new Grade A office space to Sheffield without inflicting devastating results on our fragile environment.

⛰️ Everest Update - Day 35

We are thrilled to announce that Steve has finally received a NEGATIVE Covid-19 test result 🙌

However, despite this good news, the situation in Nepal is not nearly as positive. The country is suffering from the effects of the pandemic, and the usually busy streets of Kathmandu are empty.

⛰️ Everest Update

Since Steve has ended his expedition early due to unfortunately testing positive for COVID-19, we’re sure you’re keen for an update on how he’s doing in Nepal.

🏥 Day 27 – Steve’s discharged from hospital, having to deal with regular Covid tests and bumpy taxi rides until he’s finally in his hotel where he will be isolating until further notice.

🧳 Day 28 – Messages from well-wishers are keeping Steve’s mood lifted whilst isolating in his hotel room… as does finding a piece of home in the form of a Yorkie chocolate bar. Even amidst a global pandemic, Steve is still making plans for a central redevelopment!

➕ Day 32 – Latest Covid PCR test result comes through… still positive. With flights from Nepal grounded until 14th May, Steve will be in the country for a while yet. The parallels between isolation and Grantside’s development which is built on social co-living doesn’t go unnoticed.

The situation in Nepal is currently worsening, and we can all hope this beautiful part of the world recovers swiftly.

⛰️ EVEREST UPDATE

It’s been an eventful past week…

On day 17 (20th April) Steve felt, in his own words, like he’d “been run over by a king size yak”, when base camp doctors told him that he had High-Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) - a potentially fatal illness caused by hypoxia.

After a couple of days, with a worsening cough and breathlessness, Steve headed to Kathmandu for hospital attention where he received the news that he had tested positive for COVID-19, ending up in ICU.

Steve says he read a quote from John Lennon’s Gran: “Never say you are sick. Even if you are sick. Say you are healing. Words do manifest”, and that became his mantra.

Steve is now out of any danger and coming out the other side!

One thing is for certain, one day… he will make it to the top of the mountain! Watch this space.

Day 8 – Rest day in Dingboche

This stage of the journey saw Steve in the Sherpa village of Dingboche where they were able to have an acclimatisation hike up Nangkartshang Peak, gaining 400m of elevation and an opportunity to take in the mountain views.

🌍 It’s important to remember Steve’s journey is raising awareness of climate change and our carbon-neutral ambitions as a business. In the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region flash floods are a common occurrence, but global warming is causing the glacier to retreat, forming enormous glacial lakes and causing numerous knock-on effects.

Day 7 – Deboche to Dingboche

The trek from Deboche to Dingboche sees Steve gain around 600m in altitude, at a total of 4,410m above sea level.

In order to acclimatise they take a slow journey alongside the glacial river with views of Ama Dablam.

Day 6 – Namche Bazaar to Deboche

The trek towards Everest base camp continues as Steve and the group leave Namche towards Deboche with an elevation of 3,820m.

A 10km journey sees them travel through the forest with spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse.

Travelling alongside world famous Nirmal Purja comes with many benefits, one of which is the tourists wanting to stop for pictures which brings much-needed rest breaks with them!
