Today we concluded a 2 day practical training for 20 officers of the Tourism Security unit. The training featured modules on victim identification and steps to be followed as per the National referral Mechanism.
As part of activities marking the World Day against Trafficking in persons, NAATIP with its partners and on Tuesday commemorated the day in the form of a high-level event . The commemoration featured a panel discussion with panelist drawn from the Child Protection Alliance, CEDAC, UN, The Gambia Police Force and NAATIP.
With the theme” Leave no child behind in the fight against Human Trafficking”, winners of the NAATIP inter-tertiary schools competition on TIP were presented with their prices.
A reintegration package of D30,000:00 was equally presented to a survivor of Human trafficking in The Gambia.
The event was attended by survivors of human trafficking, Civil society, NGOs, Government, foreign embassies and development partners

We are on Day 3 of the training of 250 immigration officers on Trafficking in persons indicators, victim identification and referral pathways . By Friday, the entire cohort of intake 15 will graduate.
250 Immigration officers are currently undergoing training on trafficking in persons and referral pathways. NAATIP today commenced an intensive training on trafficking in persons for the entire cohort of intake 15 of the Gambia Immigration Department. With 50 officers trained daily, the training fully funded by NAATIP is aimed at strengthening the capacity of law enforcement officers at entry and exit points in identifying victims of trafficking and in further operationalizing the National Referral Mechanism for vulnerable migrants including victims of trafficking. Our community outreach programs continue in various border communities across the country.
We are intensifying our outreach programs in schools and local communities. Like any other individual or groups, Students are equally vulnerable to Human Trafficking. The more the message gets across, the more we curb the menace.
Today , NAATIP hosts a training of over 25 investigators and prosecutors from the Federal Republic of Nigeria and The Republic of The Gambia on Trafficking in Persons. The Training is being facilitated and implemented by UNODC under the PROMIS project. Over the next five days, experts will go through various modules that are key in the investigation and prosecution of Human Trafficking .

New Conviction 🚨
In the case of Inspector General of Police v Obanla Damilola Beatrice, Obanla was today convicted of Trafficking in persons contrary to S.28(2) of the trafficking in persons Act 2007 and handed the following sentence, fine and order for compensation.
1.A 15 year mandatory jail term
2. A fine of D50,000 in default to serve 2 years imprisonment
3. Compensation of D250,000:00 to each of the two victims in default to serve 2 years imprisonment.on the compensation of each of the victims.
Trafficking in persons is a punishable offence in the Gambia.

The High Court of The Gambia today remanded Joy Ugboma, a Nigerian National charged with Trafficking in Persons contrary to S.28 (3) b of the Trafficking in Persons Act of 2007. Cases of four other accused persons namely Hannah Magbujor Isaah, Doris Emmanuel, Jennifer Oluchi Samuel and Destiny Samuel were mentioned before the High Court this month on similar charges of Trafficking in persons.

HANDING OVER OF 3 BRAND NEW VEHICLES TO THE MINISTRY OF JUSTICE FROM THE GAMBIA GOVERNMANT
The National Agency against Trafficking in Persons NAATIP, under the purview of the Ministry of Justice is mandated to combat trafficking in persons in The Gambia. On The 3rd January, 2024, during the Stakeholders work session on the 2023/2024 U.S Department of State Trafficking in Persons Questionnaire, the Gambia Government through the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice made a pledged to deliver two vehicles to NAATIP in other to facilitate the operations of the Agency.
Keeping to the commitment made by the Government his excellency the president of the Republic of the Gambia H.E Adama Barrow on Tuesday 13 February 2024 handed over 3 brand new vehicles to the Ministry of Justice. Two of the vehicles were earmarked for the National Agency against Trafficking in persons while the third was for the office of the Director of public prosecution.
In presenting the vehicles, the Minister of Justice Dawda A. Jallow thanked the government for supporting the work of its ministry and the agency under it. He reassured the Head of state of his ministry’s continued dedication to justice in the country.
President Adama barrow highlighted the importance of NAATIP as the agency responsible for combatting trafficking in persons in the Gambia. He noted the importance his government attaches to the offices of the beneficiaries while indicating the need for the institutions to be well resourced in order to deliver the desired results. President Barrow further stated that the Gambia is assessed on its anti-trafficking efforts annually. Therefore, his government will continue to provide the necessary resources to supplements the process of protecting its people and making The Gambia a crime free State
This intervention, by the Gambia Government is expected to go a long way in resolving the mobility constraints previously faced by NAATIP. It is equally expected to facilitate the work of the office of the DPP in that regard.
NAATIP’s efforts has greatly contributed to the Gambia maintaining its tier 2 ranking in the U.S Department of State Tip Report of 2023. With mobility issues becoming a thing of the past, it is expected that the agency will feature an increase in its activities across its 4 arears of intervention namely, prevention. prosecution, protection and partnership.

Today, NAATIP completed the 3rd leg of the training of 120 law enforcement officers from the KM, WCR and CRR on the National referral Mechanism. The training shall continue accross the country in the coming months .
The National Referral Mechanism for vulnerable migrants including victims of trafficking is an important tool within the anti trafficking arena. This week, NAATIP will be training 120 law enforcement officers from the KM, WCR and URR on victim identification, screening, interview techniques and key issues surrounding the effective application /use of yhe NRM in The Gambia. The training is being held on the different days attracting participants from the Police, immigration department, customs and excise, state intelligence service and the Drug Law enforcement agency.
