I have never read Linda Nochlin’s essay ' The Imaginary Orient's. Inspired by reference to her and the notion of the 'destructive s*xual fantasy' in relation to my work, in his wonderful, wonderful! text for my exhibition, I read it now. I totally connected to the way she talks about 's portrayal of women and the way it affirms 'the power of men over women, controlled and mediated by the ideology of the erotic in Delacroix;s time' . As she notes, 'The painting satisfies fantasies of men's power to enjoy the bodies of women by destroying them. '

It is this entitlement to the bodies of women that my exhibition seeks to overcome. 'How does the (female) body represent itself?' was one of the questions guiding my practice in the past years. It was interesting to read that Nochlin also notes that it would be impossible for a female painter of the time to paint a picture where the main figure would be female and the massacred bodies, the bodies of men. She calls this hypothetical painting ‘The Death of Cleopatra’. In my oil painting ‘Sardam1, The Dream’, the narrative comes close, although women are not massacring the men but rather using them for their own satisfaction. The Dream is the dream of reclaiming the power of the female body, of changing the narrative, of changing the world. Sardam is greek slang, and refers to a mixing of words, reflecting the mixing of forms and figures taking place in my paintings. 

My transposing one s*x for the other in my case however, was an action taken at the moment of painting and not a decision taken beforehand. What I paint comes out of a gesture, rather than an intellectual decision. And it is this battle between the one and the other that is at the core of my work.
